The GNOME sound settings UI will show an empty list of sound devices. When an external device is connected (for example, a Bluetooth speaker), sound works perfectly on the external device and the device indeed becomes listed in the GNOME sound settings UI. When attempting to adjust the sound volume in GNOME with no external speakers connected, the indicated sound device is "HDMI/DisplayPort". However, no sound is ever produced on the internal speakers. Version-Release number of selected component (if applicable): Fedora 21, Fedora 22 with latest kernel (4.0.2) How reproducible: Happens 100% of the time. Steps to Reproduce: 1. Install Fedora 21 or 22 with any kernel up until the latest (4.0.2) Actual results: Sound will not work on internal speakers and no sound interface will be shown in GNOME settings. Sound will work on external Bluetooth speakers or headphones. Expected results: Sound is expected to work on internal speakers. Additional info: This appears to be a bug that is common across all new laptops shipping with the new Broadwell-U chipset. It has already been reported (and apparently resolved in a kernel update) for the Dell XPS 13 which ships with the same chipset [1] [2] -- however, the fixes described therein do not aid with the Spectre x360. A bug for the Spectre x360 is also currently open over at Ubuntu's bug tracker [2]. [Bug 1441852] Re: [HP Spectre x360 - 13-4010ca] Audio broken, broadwell-U audio controller
After a little more testing, it looks like I need to do a full shutdown/startup sequence (not restart) to get sound working in 4.9 (final). It also seems I need to do the same thing when I go back to my Windows partition or sound will not work in Windows. This is significantly better than the two cold-starts required in the past, but not ideal. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1441852 Title: [HP Spectre x360 - 13-4010ca] Audio broken, broadwell-U audio controller To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/1441852/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 1441852] Re: [HP Spectre x360 - 13-4010ca] Audio broken, broadwell-U audio controller
Now I'm really confused... I saw 4.9 was released, so I installed it from the Ubuntu mainline debs (amd64: headers-all, headers-generic, image-generic). Rebooted and audio did NOT work. So I thought something must have changed between rc4 and final, so I reinstalled 4.9-rc4 (I still had the debs in my Downloads folder), rebooted, and audio still did NOT work. I don't know if it's related or not, but WiFi is now working in rc4, which makes me think I'm not actually comparing apples-to-apples... Thoughts? Sorry for the delay Chris (penalvch), I finally got back to my Linux partition. I noticed rc4 was released, so I downloaded and installed that and sound works! (wifi is still busted and I got some form of dkms apport "kernel is not supported" error when installing the deb, but that's beside the point... [Bug 1441852] Re: [HP Spectre x360 - 13-4010ca] Audio broken, broadwell-U audio controller
Sorry for the delay, but I was finally able to test 4.9rc3. The system does identify two audio devices: broadwell-rtXYZ headphones and broadwell-rtXYZ speakers (sorry, I don't remember the number). Unfortunately audio playback still doesn't work (using the sound settings panel "test settings" tool appears to be working but no sound comes out of speakers or headphones). Both alsamixer and the Sound control panel show the devices, and I tried to adjust volume to make sure something wasn't muted, but I can't rule out user error at this point. It's probably worth noting that I lose my wifi when I boot 4.9 (and the reason I didn't grab the exact name of the devices).
