Please choose the check disc option from the boot menu to verify the
integrity of the installation image, as well as the memtest option and
let it run for at least 15 minutes to see if your ram has errors.

I'm sorry but I'd already gone ahead and tried to install 14.10 in UEFI 
mode (which I despise beyond measure) and the same media installed 14.10 
in UEFI mode. But then I had an AMD-Vi IOAPIC error in dmesg, but that's 
another issue which seems to have already been reported. So I'm back to 
trying 14.04, but grub2 failed with a can't install to target error. 
I'm about to try a 14.04 reinstall so I'll test the media and RAM now. 
The tests should still be valid even though it's 14.04. If I can't get 
14.04 to install I'll try 14.10 again with the same tests.
