make sense.

Output when executed from the command line, the last line (combobox
complaint) looks to me like it might be related:

the settings are saved in ~/.kde/share/config/soundkonverterrc look at the
[Ripper] section.
which rippers appear in the ripper combobox?
i'll have a closer look at it hopefully next week.

Thanks, I was looking at the wrong file. It appears that it is updating
its configuration after all, the [Ripper] section sets
ripper=cdparanoia or ripper=kio_audiocd depending on my selection.
Looking at the process list shows that it is correctly using cdparanoia
after all.
