Same here, intel + nvidia 940MX, cannot activate nvidia's card even with
the most recent drivers (381.xx). The card should be supported many
versions ago.

So the gist of it here is (retried on a new install
340 drivers - gets an xorg.conf, boots to that totally worthless low graphics
screen
361 (ubuntu), 361 & 364 from ppa - no xorg.conf created, if xorg.conf is
already there it's mv'd, boots to a greeter loop
358 from ppa - 1st. reboot from
Starting fresh trying the340 drivers, just goes to low graphics on 1st
reboot, any subsquent boots go nowhere, black screen.

Very odd, this is what happens
prior to and directly after installing the nvidia drivers this is shown & as
expected. Also after purging nvidia* & rebooting -
$ sudo lshw -c display
[sudo] password for doug:
*-display
description: VGA compatible controller
Hi Doug,
gpu-manager.log does not show any nvidia GPUs in your system. Maybe you
disabled the nvidia GPU?
Also, what is the output of the following command?
update-alternatives --display x86_64-linux-gnu_gl_conf
