[Bug 159630] Re: Ubuntu install failure on Dell Inspiron 2600
I have an Inspiron 2600, I got Ubuntu 7.1 to install, but not much else. You need to download the ALTERNATE CD, when you go to download the regular one on Ubuntu's site, down at the bottom it says Check here if you need the Alternate CD or something like that. The Alt CD is a text only installer. The 2600 apparently can't run the graphics for the install so you end up with the washout colors, which I had as well. The text only install works OK, its is a little distorted, but you can still read the options well enough to install. I was also able to do a graphics install, when I had to reinstall it becuause I messed something up, by hooking up the Video-out on the laptop to a 19 inch LCD monitor, somehow it worked, and the LiveCD eventually started up, don't ask me why, but it worked. But if you disconnect the regular monitor you just go back to crazy colors. The laptop screen does let you see the command line though once you install Ubuntu. But it's really zoomed in and you can only see about half the field, so it's pretty useless. I'm still looking for how to fix all this, hopefully someone has done it before. -- Ubuntu install failure on Dell Inspiron 2600 https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/159630 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 159630] Re: Ubuntu install failure on Dell Inspiron 2600
I have a Dell Inspiron 2600 which currently has XP Pro and Feisty Kubuntu installed in a dual-boot configuration. Feisty Ubuntu also worked in the same configuration, but I prefer KDE over Gnome. I ordered the Gutsy Kubuntu disk from Canonical. They sent me the Gutsy Ubuntu disk. I tried to run it as a live disk. The set-up seems to run to completion but the screen turns a funny colour (like a wash) that slowly changes colour. That sems to be the same issue as here. No command is usable. The keyboard is dead. FYI, the graphics chipboard is Intel 830. The processor is a 731/1000 MH Pentium 3. 512 MB RAM. Bios A09. It should be taken into account that I had to downgrade the BIOS from A011 to be able to install Linux at all--there has been a problem exactly on the graphics for several years with the later versions of BIOS from about Fedora Core 1 (if I remember correctly: I don't know what the corresponding Ubuntu release would be). Eventually the Gutsy Kubuntu disk came, same problem. This doesn't seem to bode well for an upgrade from Feisty to Gutsy--and even makes me nervous about updates from the Web to the current Feisty configuration, especially if the problem is going to appear in a kernel update. I see that with the complications in installing Gutsy on HP machines, there is a problem there with graphics drivers and kernel updates. As for the present configuration of XP Pro and Feisty on the Dell Inspiron 2600, this Linux configuration works, although not quite as bug-free as I would have hoped. It's not quite as smooth in the user interface department as XP. I tried doing what Canonical suggests, running the live disk under XP to see the XP-compatible products, but that caused things to freeze when Melodeon tried to install. I had to can the installation. So what gives with Gutsy? How do I run it on the Dell Inspiron 2600? I noticed that there are some hardware issues on HP laptops with Gutsy. Perhaps there is a similar problem here?
