Your /var/log/samba/cores directory is owned by user "ats", not root.
The same goes for the inner nmbd and smbd directories.
Please change that by running this command:
sudo chown root /var/log/samba/cores /var/log/samba/cores/*
And then try the systemctl restart command from earlier again.

Hi, Attached the recent samba folder zipped. 'cores' folder was already
there. So, I didn't create it.
I ran the command:
ls -la /var/log/samba/cores
Here's what I get:
ats@ats-pc:~$ ls -la /var/log/samba/cores
total 16
drwx-- 4 ats root 4096 May 21 2017 .
drwxr-xr-x 3 root root 4096 Nov
Thanks, but you didn't attach the log files from /var/log/samba/ for
this last attempt at starting the services. Or was there nothing new in
there?
That being said, I saw this snippet from nmbd:
Jan 10 06:08:16 ats-pc nmbd[1085]: Failed to create /var/log/samba/cores for
user 0 with mode 0700

Yes.. here it is
Attached the output for those commands and syslog file.
Meanwhile I tried to run this command "sudo apt install ruby-bundler" and I
got the same error.
Also attached the console output.
Please let me know what's the issue with my system.
Thanks :)

Thanks for filing this bug in Ubuntu.
The logs you attached confirm that the smbd service failed to start, but
do not state the reason. This would be in the more detailed logs in
/var/log/samba/log*.
Could you please attach the log files from /var/log/samba?
Thanks!
