No, I think that file is optional and ideally should not exist.

2021-07-06 Thread Daniel van Vugt
Ideally please don't attach log files with "recovery nomodeset" because
they're not relevant to the main issue here. Although in this case I can
tell you now have Nvidia driver version 465 installed successfully so
that's something.

Next please:

1. Edit /etc/gdm3/custom.conf and uncomment the debug option:

 #Enable=true

   so it is:

 Enable=true

2. Reboot without recovery mode so you get a black screen.

3. Wait at least 10 seconds on the black screen.

4. Reboot with recovery mode.

5. Run:

   journalctl -b-1 > prevboot.txt

6. Attach the resulting text file here.

Is driver 465 working? If so then please collect a new log:

  journalctl -b0 > journal.txt

and attach it here.

If 465 is not working then please try 430.

[Bug 1934647] Re: Nvidia driver black screen at login.

2021-07-06 Thread Daniel van Vugt
Yes, sorry, I can kind of see the issue happening with kernel
5.8.0-59.66~20.04.1-generic in prevboot3.txt. In case something related
to the login screen has crashed, please look in /var/crash and tell us
what you find.

It also appears you still don't have the Nvidia driver installed so
please try to install that again with:

  sudo apt install nvidia-driver-430

because the Nvidia website seems to recommend stable driver version 430
for your card, or 465 if you need newer features.

Finally, your wifi driver 'rtw_8822be' (or wifi card) appears to be
broken and the kernel is flooding the log with errors. I'm not sure if
that's related to the main bug here though.

** Description changed:

If I choose nvidia driver, then the screen is black and I cannot log in. To
log in, I need to delete all nvidia files.
After that, the xorg is selected and I can log in. But I cannot edit
brightness. I can hardly see anything on the screen. The battery is draining
very badly.

[Bug 1934647] Re: Nvidia driver black screen at login.

2021-07-06 Thread Anatoli Navahrodski
Friend I can't wait - I need to work. Therefore, I deleted Ubuntu 21. I put the
version 20.04 (the problem was initially started on this version).
I have two versions.
5.8.0-59-generic - does not work.
5.8.0-43-generic - works fine.
5.8.0-59-Generic worked fine until I rebooted the computer. After that, the
black screen is again.

2021-07-05 Thread Daniel van Vugt
Thanks for the bug report. Please be careful to only report one problem
per bug. You can open multiple bugs.

Let's make this bug about the black screen issue only. To debug that
further we will need to see a system log from when the Nvidia driver was
installed and you did NOT have "recovery nomodeset" kernel parameters.

Please run:

  journalctl -b-1 > prevboot1.txt
  journalctl -b-2 > prevboot2.txt
  journalctl -b-3 > prevboot3.txt
  journalctl -b-4 > prevboot4.txt
  journalctl -b-5 > prevboot5.txt

and attach the resulting text files.
