Still happening after all these years. /me sighs.
I confirm this is still happening on Saucy. I've never had any *buntu in which
it didn't happen. I suspect it is a mouse driver problem. Interesting that
someone also had it on xp. I suspect that may be a red herring though. It is
entirely possible that a xp or other windows has a similar problem and for a
similar reason. I've only experienced this on *buntus. Not on pclinuxos. Not on
Sabayon. Not on Salix. That could be coincidence, but I doubt it. It isn't just
firefox. I just had it on Saucy trying to use the openbox menu. 3 times in a
row. Twice it logged me out and the 3rd time it rebooted.

This a very lightweight system. Lighter than Lubuntu, lighter than plain
LXDE. I started with the 32 bit Saucy mini.iso and added xorg, openbox,
lightdm, lightdm-gtk-greeter, lxterminal, lxtask, firefox, 1 lxpanel
with a clock, 7 launchers (or whatever LX chaps call them), and a
taskbar. I have the autostart (I forger which one, one of the ones
associated with login at any rate) set NOT to start pcmanfm and draw a
desktop. My desktop is merely a featureless gray, which I'll change
to green when I get around to it. When I want to look at the ~/Desktop
directory I do it with pcmanfm in detail view like I view any other
directory. I tweaked appearnce by editing the theme files directly. In
summary, it is about as light as a gui system can be. My cpu is an AMD
Athlon(tm) II X2 245 Processor and Ihave 4 gigs of RAM. Nothing
amazing but it certainly should be adequate.

So, I suspect:

1 - There is a kind of quasi-randomness to this that makes it hard to
track down and leads people into spurious conclusions.

2 - While it is more likely to occur when some system resource, probably
cpu, is overstretched, it can still occur when load is quite low.
Firefox is probably associated with this a lot because it is a bit of
resource hog.

3 - This is probably a *buntu issue, or just possibly, a Debian issue.
Although I ran LMDE a while and I don't recall haveing it there. The
fellow who has it in xp probably experienced a different bug of the same
nature.

3 - It is most likely a mouse driver issue. Even if it isn't, it might
be easier to write a workaround into a mouse driver than to track the
actual problem. Could be as simple as making a right click equivalent to
right click and hold until a left click occurs.

4 - If there is a competition this has my vote for most annoying *buntu
bug of all time.

---
BTW, I'm not sure how this is going to post my name. If it seems a tad
belligerent, it is because I was getting very frustrated trying to create a
launchpad account, and it isn't directed at anyone here.

Status in “firefox-3.0” source package in Ubuntu: New

Bug description:
Binary package hint: firefox-3.0

When I right click on an item in firefox 3, occasionally the menu does not
appear, but instead firefox chooses an item at random from the menu and
executes that.

It seems to happen more frequently if the system/firefox is under load (eg
when update-manager is updating or when many tabs are open in firefox).

It *might* be that holding the mouse button down longer prevents it from
happening, but it's hard to tell because of the random nature of the bug.

I'm experiencing the same problem under these conditions:

My mouse is a Logitech MX310 connected via USB on my Lenovo (not so powerfull)
laptop with buildin Synaptic mouse.
It only occures when i do a quickly short mouse-click.

In my humble opinion, it seems like the menu is still unfolding and/or taking
position at the moment I release the button.
This behavior could be equal to pressing the right-mouse button, holding it
down, hover the (un)wanted menu option and then releasing the button.
This handling also be a temporary solution as it prevents this from happening,
until a solution is offered.

I think the solution should be a check whether the menu is fully shown
before the right-mousebutton-release is taken as a click to select the
menu option.

Canonical has nothing to do with fixing this since most support is just
done by community. Please use the other bug to make comments. other bug
number is above the firefox task at top left of page. Since the
community supports packages we only have so many people working on so
many other packages to we get to them as soon as we can, If you think
you can fix it or find the issue post it to bug.

Just wanted to confirm along with everyone else that I have experienced
this bug ONLY in Firefox 3 ever since I installed Hardy Heron. I rarely
use Windows so I can't confirm it there but I ONLY experience it in
Firefox - no other Linux apps and I use Linux as my primary desktop work
application so I'm using it all day long.

And along with most everyone else, I use right-click to open links in
new tabs or new windows and probably 20-30% of the time instead of
getting the right-click menu some other random action will be performed.

And yes it's really frustrating.

If I could get the developers more info to help track it down I would
gladly instead of this being a forum to confirm our sanity.

My family and I notice this all of the time.

It appears most often when using YouTube, and there's already a Flash
video playing, but it happens at other times. Often it occurs when
there's a heavy load in the browser, like when I have several YouTube
pages open at the same time in tabs, and I go to right click and open a
new tab and it pauses, followed by opening Evolution, a save-to window,
or an Add to Bookmarks window instead of opening the new page in a new
tab. It has been frustrating my family members since I upgraded to
Firefox 3 in HH. I never saw this error in FF2.

I recommend visiting YouTube and opening a few pages of videos in tabs
by right clicking on them and opening in a new tab. I'm sure after a few
tabs are loaded this bug may be easily reproduced.

So, with me it is almost always Evolution assistant that gets launched, even
though there is no email option in the right-click menu.
Sometimes, it takes the first menu option and opens the link in a new window.
This is not only very annoying, it is becoming very frustrating too. I am a

I (not the person you reply to), have cooperated substantially to
analyze bug #187313 (for example, I found a workaround). I found
necessary to extract into Bug #238733, from the mass of the discussion,
a very important and valid issue for every bug searcher to find and
muse on.
I asked to record that issue alongside the Wishlist entries, 7500 often
of much less importance.
I was thanked with insistence my text be hidden under invalid status

This happens to me as well, and I'm running Firefox 3 on Windows XP. I
believe this problem is caused by the positioning of the context menu in
Firefox 3. In previous versions, if I remember correctly, the point
that you right-mouse click marks the corner of where the menu pops up.
In Firefox 3, I find that the point you click marks somewhere in the
middle of the menu. So, the cursor is now directly to the left of one
of the options in the menu (or, if you're on the far right side of the
screen, directly ON the menu). My guess is that if you're moving along
quickly, Firefox interprets your motion as another click and brings up
the option it thinks you clicked on. That explains why holding down the
 button prevents this problem.

Still, pretty annoying, since I usually am moving my cursor around
 pretty quickly.

Firefox 3 in windows and firefox 3 in linux and firefox 3 in mac are not
built the same at all so telling us you do or dont see it on windows
isnt being all that helpful unless you find an upstream bug for it.

2008-05-03 Thread Rocko
I've had it happen again a couple of times in nautilus, so again I don't
think it's specific to firefox - it's just that I use the right mouse
button far more frequently in firefox.

I am seeing this bug too, only seems to be on firefox, both on Thinkpad
r50e and on HP pavillion DV6500, thought I was just knocking the middle
scroll button to start. This happens about every 20 right clicks or so,
machine doesn't have to be under load, all latest updates installed on

Same for me. I find that if I press and hold the right mouse button, the
menu comes up fine, but if I give it a single click it sometimes comes
up OK, other times it performs a random task from the menu as noted
above.

This is also happening on a Dell XPS 1530. It's not as frequent,
possibly because it's a faster machine, but it is definitely happening.

[Bug 206295] Re: firefox 3 right-click menu chooses random options

2008-04-19 Thread Rocko
I can reproduce it with Firefox with a brand new user.

Current version info is:

Ubuntu 8.04 (updated to RC1 as of 19th April)
Firefox 3.0~b5+nobinonly-0ubuntu2
xserver-xorg-input-kbd 1:1.2.2-3ubuntu1
xserver-xorg-input-vmmouse 1:12.4.3-1ubuntu1
xorg 1:7.3+10ubuntu10

The mouse I'm using is reported in dmesg as USB HID v1.11 Mouse
[Microsoft Microsoft USB Wireless Mouse] on usb-:00:1d.0-1, and the
computer is a Dell Inspiron 8600.

Any hints on how I might help to debug it?

[Bug 206295] Re: firefox 3 right-click menu chooses random options

2008-04-04 Thread Rocko
I can reproduce it 'reasonably' readily if I open lots of tabs (eg 20 or
so) and then repeatedly try to save an image from one of them (right-
click, 'v', escape to cancel). If the save window doesn't come up, it
has selected another option (like block images or copy website);
otherwise a different window might come up (eg the 'set up evolution'
wizard). It might help to load the CPU by running something CPU-
intensive at the same time.

This is much faster than opening a page in a new tab because you can do
this mouse/key combination in rapid succession.

The BBC website is good for this because each page has an image.

In normal usage it happens enough to be very annoying. It will execute a
command like 'block images from this website' from the menu, which you
then have to undo. It might do this two or three times in a row, and
then go back to operating correctly.

I do think though that it's an xorg keyboard problem rather than a
Firefox problem because it has happened for me in Nautilus. I use the
right click far less frequently in Nautilus, however, so I've only seen
it twice.

Thanks for your report, that works fine for me with latest package on
Hardy Heron.

I'm closing this report but feel free to re open it if you have specific
instructions on how to reproduce the problem and you can reproduce it
with a new user and firefox profile created on your computer.

Thanks.

[Bug 206295] Re: firefox 3 right-click menu chooses random options

2008-03-25 Thread Rocko
It might not be an issue specific to Firefox, because it just happened
in Nautilus - I right-clicked on a file (to choose the 'open with'
option), and it just opened it straight away without showing the menu.

This is with xorg 1:7.3+10ubuntu7, xserver-xorg-input-kbd
1:1.2.2-3ubuntu1, xserver-xorg-input-mouse 1:1.2.3-2.
