[Bug 213053] Re: Totem is 'uninterruptible'
Closing this bug with Won't fix as this kernel / release is no longer supported. Please feel free to open a new bug report if you're still experiencing this on a newer release (Bionic 18.04.3 / Disco 19.04) Thanks! ** Changed in: linux (Ubuntu) Status: Incomplete => Won't Fix -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/213053 Title: Totem is 'uninterruptible' To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/pulseaudio/+bug/213053/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 213053] Re: Totem is 'uninterruptible'
According to a report today in bug 925309, the kernel part of this might have been fixed, making the processes killable. Also, if bug 913787 is correct, ecryptfs might have a hand on these 100% CPU processes (although not necessarily in the totem case, where I agree with comment #88). -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/213053 Title: Totem is 'uninterruptible' To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/pulseaudio/+bug/213053/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 213053] Re: Totem is 'uninterruptible'
I think that's a different thing. The problem here was with processes that didn't respond to a kill. If they get a new PID, then they are being killed and something else is firing them up again. Probably you have a file that is causing the thumbnailer to get stuck, I'd try to figure out what that file is (lsof will help here) and file a new bug on it.

I'm sorry for posting in this old bug, but I'm having this issue with yet another program. See for yourself this sequence of commands: $ sudo -s # uname -a Linux tacitus 2.6.35-23-generic #41-Ubuntu SMP Wed Nov 24 10:18:49 UTC 2010 i686 GNU/Linux # ps ax | grep amule | grep -v grep 2912 ?R326:29 amule # kill -9 2912 # kill -9 2912 # ps ax | grep amule | grep -v grep 2912 ?R326:43 amule # kill -SIGSTOP 2912 # ps ax | grep amule | grep -v grep 2912 ?R326:52 amule # ps aux | grep amule | grep -v grep jano 2912 82.5 1.0 96156 39396 ?RDec14 327:26 amule Basically, the process is impervious to two signals that should have some effect. Meanwhile, its window is frozen and it consumes 100% of one CPU. I have several up-to-date maverick machines, and this is the only one exhibiting this problem, so perhaps it is dependent on some hardware component. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/213053 Title: Totem is 'uninterruptible' -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 213053] Re: Totem is 'uninterruptible'
Glyph, the change New - Fix Released happened in the project PulseAudio (have a look at the top of this bug for that). Next to it there is a bug number. If you follow the link you get to the bug in the upstream bug tracker (upstream is where the developers of the software are and fix the bugs, we then pull the new package version). This helps us keeping track of the progress. If you read through the comments in the upstream bug you'll see that it says: * status changed from new to closed * resolution set to fixed * milestone set to 0.9.16 This was a problem with dlunloading modules if I remember. Which has been fixed a while back in PA. Closing In this case they actually provid a version number the bug fix will be present in: 0.9.16 Then, we (the bug triagers) will have a look at the version that is currently in ubuntu (rmadison is a great tool for that): *snip* pulseaudio | 1:0.9.14-0ubuntu20.2 | jaunty-updates | source, amd64, i386 pulseaudio | 1:0.9.16~test4-0ubuntu4 |karmic | source, amd64, i386 You can see that the development version karmic already ships with a test-version of 0.9.16 so this bug might already be fixed. After some testing feedback (best from the bug reporter, because he had the problem) the bug can be closed :). -- Totem is 'uninterruptible' https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/213053 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

I know fairly well what I am doing to cause this same problem for myself... but not why. r...@murphy:/home/echo# uname -a \Linux Murphy 2.6.28-13-generic #45-Ubuntu SMP Tue Jun 30 19:49:51 UTC 2009 i686 GNU/Linux r...@murphy:/home/echo# ps aux | grep totem echo 4001 7.4 4.7 191324 48892 ?D12:14 23:18 totem /home/echo/.gvfs/media on bcz/music/Blue Man Group/The Complex/Above.mp3 root 11562 0.0 0.0 3336 800 pts/1S+ 17:32 0:00 grep totem Note that the file is on a Windows XP machine on the local network. I do not know why, but this problem has not failed to occur for me any time I do the following: - I played a playlist of networked audio files earlier in the day - I left and came back over 2 hours later - I hit play to start the playlist again and Totem stopped responding I know that Totem could not find the file because Nautilus also could not find the file; when I refreshed the folder view, Nautilus alerted me that the directory was unavailable: Could not display smb://bcz/media/music/Blue%20Man%20Group. Error: DBus error org.freedesktop.DBus.Error.NoReply: Did not receive a reply. Possible causes include: the remote application did not send a reply, the message bus security policy blocked the reply, the reply timeout expired, or the network connection was broken. Please select another viewer and try again. Note, it just told me some possible problems that could be occurring, and of these, I feel like the last, network connection was broken seems to be the most likely in my case (the other computer falls off of the network, for no apparent reason, on a regular basis). Totem, on the other hand, is still hanging, still Uninterruptible and waiting for a response. The Waiting Channel in the System Monitor reads request_wait_answer Unlike other people in this thread, my totem is not utilizing any noticeable CPU time. One thing I have wondered - does SMB/CIFS have a time-out that disconnects the network channel? As of now, when I save this comment, it will have been uninterruptible for over an hour, the longest I have let it stay that way yet. [Bug 213053] Re: Totem is 'uninterruptible'
This is not Hardy-specific. Running Intrepid. It's a kernel bug, and still in 2.6.7. uname -a: Linux ricardo-desktop 2.6.27-10-generic #1 SMP Fri Nov 21 12:00:22 UTC 2008 i686 GNU/Linux. It's the same thing here. Totem in uninterruptible sleep, can't be killed. The kernel is stuck in exit_mm, after scheduling out the process. I tried to attach gdb to it, but gdb is [code]wait[/code]ing for totem. Try to SIGTERM gdb, and it asserts from linux-nat.c:1072. (Not sure if this will help, though...) The following message is output to /var/log/syslog, /var/log/kern.log and /var/log/messages every 2 minutes (sometimes, it's printed more than once at one time): Dec 13 09:18:38 ricardo-desktop kernel: [161877.321406] INFO: task totem:27754 blocked for more than 120 seconds. Still happening, updated to the latest everything in Hardy. This time I made a tarball of /proc/pid of the affected process; I can upload bits of that if it would be helpful to anyone. I checked in /var/log/kern.log and discovered that a totem segfault immediately preceded the unkillable process, but several other totem segfaults had occurred recently apparently with no ill effect. [Bug 213053] Re: Totem is 'uninterruptible'
I tried to add my comment before but I cannot see it yet, so I'll try again. I wonder if Ubuntu has changed classical Unix privilege settings , and if that might be the problem. I have exactly the same problem with Totem becoming uninterruptible. I watch a movie and close the window. The GUI disappears but the process seems to survive. I have managed to set a password for root and I cannot kill -9 the process. Now here is my question. I work with both Solaris, HP-Unix and Linux. I have never seen a case where root cannot kill -9 a process. In the Unix signal definitions, you can read that the 9-signal is not catchable by any process, and root should have the right to send any signal to any process. Why on earth is the process not dying? Does this occur on other flavors of Linux, like Suse, Mandriva or Slackware? Has Ubuntu (and possibly Debian) modified the privileges of root? -- Totem is 'uninterruptible' https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/213053 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 213053] Re: Totem is 'uninterruptible'
tony_s: I doubt it's a permissions/privileges issue. My guess is that there is a kernel bug of some type going on and the process gets wedged in there, and so is unkillable until it returns, which never happens. The Ubuntu Kernel Team is planning to move to the 2.6.27 kernel for the upcoming Intrepid Ibex 8.10 release. As a result, the kernel team would appreciate it if you could please test this newer 2.6.27 Ubuntu kernel. There are one of two ways you should be able to test: 1) If you are comfortable installing packages on your own, the linux- image-2.6.27-* package is currently available for you to install and test. --or-- 2) The upcoming Alpha5 for Intrepid Ibex 8.10 will contain this newer 2.6.27 Ubuntu kernel. Alpha5 is set to be released Thursday Sept 4. Please watch http://www.ubuntu.com/testing for Alpha5 to be announced. You should then be able to test via a LiveCD. Please let us know immediately if this newer 2.6.27 kernel resolves the bug reported here or if the issue remains. More importantly, please open a new bug report for each new bug/regression introduced by the 2.6.27 kernel and tag the bug report with 'linux-2.6.27'. Also, please specifically note if the issue does or does not appear in the 2.6.26 kernel. That 'fix' actually made things less usable. If I was running Flash, Rhythmbox would finish what it was playing then stall when starting the next song. The only solution was to close everything that was using sounds (Firefox, Pidgin, Rhythmbox) and start it all up again. Whatever what 'fix' did must've made Flash queue for use of the sound card, but Flash still wasn't releasing the card afterward. [Bug 213053] Re: Totem is 'uninterruptible'
Would like to say I'm also having this problem. It happens rather regularly too. This time Pidgin is affected, it's uninterruptible and is hovering around the 70% CPU range, sometimes climbing to 100%. All the files it seems to have open are *.wav files, so that may point to it being PulseAudio? Seems to happen to a random program (usually the one opened last) which is trying to play sound - Firefox 3 and Pidgin have been affected so far. Weirdly, however, I have killed PulseAudio, restarted RhythmBox and it's still playing! Even though it hasn't restarted PulseAudio, so maybe I'm not killing the right thing (or maybe RhythmBox doesn't use PulseAudio, which might therefore point to another culprit not releasing the sound device? Stabs in the dark..) It presents itself by making my system sluggish, but not unusable, so I'll leave it on with the program in the background for a little while, see if it relents. If you need more details or for me to test anything, please let me know. It happens rather regularly to me so I'm sure I can get a result of an experiment quite quickly ^_~ -- Totem is 'uninterruptible' https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/213053 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 213053] Re: Totem is 'uninterruptible'
Haven't been able to get it to crash today. However, I have observed some odd behavior: If I play a youtube, rhythmbox won't play at the same time. When the Youtube ends, I have to restart Rhythmbox for it to play again. Same with VLC. However, if I leave my Rhythmbox playing, Youtube can't play sounds. I have to close Rhythmbox, then close Firefox, and then re-open. Now, I spend hours on end playing from my Rhythmbox library or my VLC video (ahem) collection, whilst browsing the internet. The internet is full of flash with music, which I usually watch soundless if at all. But we're talking hours without closing these programs. So, I suppose my question is, has this got to do with the way that Adobe's Flash is interfacing with the sound card? If so, is there a buffer that's filling and filling until it sends errors back to the program filling it? Or not sending a confirmation, leaving the program to keep the request open? This is pseudo-techie talk, so bear with me here, but it would explain why Pidgin still had 6-7 sound files open once the program was meant to be closed. Thing is, Pidgin, Totem and Rhythmbox usually play well together. So is Adobe-Flash what's throwing the spanner in the works? Has anyone else affected by this got Adobe-Flash on their system? It's another stab in the dark - I'll update when it crashes tomorrow ;) -- Totem is 'uninterruptible' https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/213053 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 213053] Re: Totem is 'uninterruptible'
It's just happened to me once again, but this time I was running it from a terminal. The last (and I think only relevant) message was: E: thread-posix.c: Assertion 'pthread_setspecific(t-key, userdata) == 0' failed at pulsecore/thread-posix.c:194, function pa_tls_set(). Aborting. I had recently seen a blog post suggesting pulseaudio might sometime be responsible for uninterruptible processes. Well, it seems to me like this message confirms it (the assertion is thrown from pulsecore). Also experiencing this bug on: Linux khaeru-desktop 2.6.24-19-generic #1 SMP Wed Jun 18 14:43:41 UTC 2008 i686 GNU/Linux ...with no useful information beyond what has already been posted. As Glyph Lefkowitz says, someone kernel-savvy needs to try and reproduce this and see what's going on. I am the 14th person to echo brad's original report, so it seems reasonable to mark this as confirmed in linux, but not in Totem per Christian Landtag's comment about audacity, wine, etc. This may be wrong, but I'm unsure of how to get developer acknowledgement or attention otherwise. The behaviour is evidently not chimerical and the posters here (or at least I) are clearly beyond our depth in terms of figuring out precisely what is happening. Pedro Villavicencio, is the information already provided not sufficient to diagnose or fix the bug? If not, what else can we do to provide it? Kjell, since you seem to know more than most commenters about the kernel packages, can you suggest someone to provide guidance in reporting? [Bug 213053] Re: Totem is 'uninterruptible'
I finally found what is/was causing the uninterruptible problem on my system. After upgrading the kernel to 2.6.24-19 the programs that went uninterruptible before worked as they should. Today I reinstalled the drivers for my DVB/TV Tuner and I had the bug again. Uninstalled the drivers and modules and the programs worked flawlessly again. It seems one of the modules that is build to support the tuner causes the bug on my system although the same drivers caused no trouble under Gutsy but it began after the upgrade to Hardy. I would rule out the drivers themselves as the source for the bug because as I mentioned there were no problems under Gutsy and I tried two different versions of the drivers, both with the same result. So could it be a bug with the way Hardy builds modules or with the kernel source used for building them? -- Totem is 'uninterruptible' https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/213053 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

Sorry for the double post but I just thought if the problem is caused by certain modules could it be that the uninterruptible processes only come up when a certain module is loaded for example when some device is attached or switched on, while the bug doesn't happen when the module is unloaded and the device not attached or switched of? -- Totem is 'uninterruptible' https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/213053 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 213053] Re: Totem is 'uninterruptible'
I've noticed this happen twice now, on Ubuntu 8.04, where Totem gets into an unkillable state after I try to exit it at the end of a movie. The first time I left the system running for days, but totem never exited, just runs and runs burning CPU. Running kill -9 as root on the process does nothing. I had not seen this before installing the 64-bit version of 8.04, though I can't confirm that this is related. $ uname -a Linux server 2.6.24-18-generic #1 SMP Wed May 28 19:28:38 UTC 2008 x86_64 GNU/Linux I attempted to 'strace' the process, but that didn't provide any useful output. $ ps -ef | grep totem username 17864 1 60 10:02 ?02:18:51 totem file:///home/username/movie.avi $ strace -vp 17864 Process 17864 attached - interrupt to quit I waited 5 minutes, but nothing. Seems odd, as the process is clearly eating up 100% of the CPU on one of my cores. I wasn't able to ctrl-c out of strace, I had to ctrl-z then kill -9. kill -15 did not kill the strace. This errant totem process does not happen every time I watch a movie with totem, but it has happened twice in the past week, with different movies. To duplicate, I'd try running and stopping totem a few dozen times. The only way to end this process that I've found so far is a reboot. [Bug 213053] Re: Totem is 'uninterruptible'
I have the unkillable process problem without fuse or totem being involved, on a headless server install, not running X. Was installing sbcl (sudo apt-get install sbcl) inside a screen(1) session and now the apt process and the launched sbcl (which is trying to generate some cache or something) are both unkillable with kill -9 and killall -9. The other interesting symptom is that pstree -p reports all processes fine, but ps aux actually locks up midway through its report. When the sbcl install locked up for over an hour, I instinctively ctrl-c'd it and ran it again without noticing the first one had not died. Now I have multiple unkillable sbcl processes; I've attached the relevant section of pstree. The screen session that launched those processes is also now unkillable, but other processes (new and old) are behaving normally. If I reliably duplicate this, I'll post more info. ** Attachment added: pstree.txt http://launchpadlibrarian.net/14699871/pstree.txt -- Totem is 'uninterruptible' https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/213053 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 213053] Re: Totem is 'uninterruptible'
Sadly I can't remove my mistaken report against Fuse or the probably- wrong report against Totem, but the additional report of apt-get becoming unkillable suggests that this is clearly a kernel bug (as my original duplicate bug said). Can anyone kernel-savvy give us some help with diagnosing or narrowing down this bug? My media center, running Hardy, seems to exhibit this bug at least once a week if I'm using totem; but, interestingly, not if I'm running VLC. If anyone has some suggested additional diagnosis, I'll switch my default media player back so that I can get those periodic crashes back and gather data. I'm keeping most of my machines on Gutsy right now because this is a reliability disaster for me (my only hardy machine requires weekly rebooting, either from compiz or totem doing this) so I'm willing to put in a bit of work to get it resolved. ** Also affects: linux-meta (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: New -- Totem is 'uninterruptible' https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/213053 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

I ran in the same problem. Ubuntu 8.04 totem 2.22.1 gstreamer 0.10.18 The process hang when I tried to exit totem while playing a movie. Video stream: DivX MPEG-4 Version 5 512 x 384 Audio stream: MPEG 1 Audio, Layer 3 Stereo 44100 Hz 96 kbps Killing with kill -9 did not work. The played file was a local file on a ext3 formatted drive. IMHO I think the problem is somewhere in the device driver either ext3 or in the block driver itself. However dmesg and all log files do not reveal any additional information. Therefore I assume no detectable crash or error happened. Another possible problem could be associated with the audio or video output. The audio is controlled by pulseaudio on my system and the sound events still worked after totem got into this interruptible state. Therefore I assume the video-output (xv) can also be guilty part. Because it is so hard to reproduce the bug (I just had this problem twice in the last weeks), I guess it is some sort of race condition. I can also confirm this behavior. I have tried to remake the behavior that used 100% of the CPU, but couldn't. When it was eating the process power, I did a CTRL ALT BACKSPACE and logged back in again, but it didn't help, I had to restart the computer to kill the process. I didn't find this bug until I restarted so I can't really give any technical data. I have some ideas what caused it though, I hope it may help. 1. When I tried to kill the process it had a very long name with a lot of %s and numbers, not the real folder name of the movie (though the English part was spelled right). The movie was Korean and the Korean letters on my folder is ¤س¤ÃÙÎ͵ ¼ÁÍÂҡ¡ʹ¤ÃѺ probably because I don't have Korean language installed. 2. This only happens on longer movies for me, after around 1 hour. 3. This movie was from a VCD copied to the computer, so called a .dat file. My first thoughts after seeing these posts are that none who had the bug has an English last name, and maybe the process name or link (I'm quite a noob) in other than an English language doesn't correspond to the actual folder and it can't kill it if it can't find it. I wish I had taken a screen shot of the process weird extended name, if I encounter this again, I'll send you one. I hope this could clear up a bit.
