Samsung Q70 - error while modprobing video, also can't adjust backlight
https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/216221
Okay, on my Arch Q70 laptop, with a 2.6.27 custom-built kernel, I can
now adjust brightness from the console with Fn+Up/Dn keys. X recognizes
these keys also, but the Nvidia X driver wouldn't let to change the
screen brightness from within X (this issue is really LONG aged). The
issue is
As a noob, I don't know what modprobe is but I have a Q70 running
Ubuntu 8.04 - fully patched - with Linux kernel 2.6.24-21 generic. I'm
willing to answer questions if required in order to help get this
resolved - its incredibly irritating!
Something I did try and can report is an error from the
Wildy,
Since you are the original bug reporter care to also confirm if this is
resolved for you wit the newer Intrepid 2.6.27 kernel? Also, I'm going
to close the linux-meta task as the linux task itself is sufficient for
tracking this. Thanks.

I'm not currently using Ubuntu on my Q70, since I switched to Arch Linux
quite some time ago. But I'll test the video.ko behavior in 2.6.27 as
soon as possible (there is a whole _lot_ of sysadmin work, and that's
the reason for being online at 4AM =^_^=).
Kudos to you, you're great (and by the

The Ubuntu Kernel Team is planning to move to the 2.6.27 kernel for the
upcoming Intrepid Ibex 8.10 release. As a result, the kernel team would
appreciate it if you could please test this newer 2.6.27 Ubuntu kernel.
There are one of two ways you should be able to test:

Beginning with the Hardy Heron 8.04 development cycle the kernel source
package naming convention changed from linux-source-2.6.xx to just
linux. Going forward, kernel bugs should now be reported against the
linux package. I'm going to automatically retarget this bug against
the linux package.

Hi!
You just need to cat the value while in textmode. Just switch to another
VT, log in and then use 'sudo su -', then cat it
into /proc/acpi/video/NVID/LCD/brightness. Supposingly, the NVidia
drivers prohibit ACPI interfacing when you're in X.

My Q70 boots up ubunut 8.04.1 without any problems but I cannot adjust
brightness.
I've already tried the keys on the keyboard, any brightness setting programm
from the repros and writing a value to /proc/acpi/video/NVID/LCD/brightness.
I'm a bit afraid of trying to install the drivers via envy
Still no luck with custom-built 2.6.25.5. Am I screwed up? :P

I've finally succeeded with adjusting the screen brightness.
Firstly, I've added acpi_fake_ecdt=1 option to boot parameters.
Then switched to the console and was able to adjust the brightness by
cat $VALUE /proc/acpi/video/NVID/LCD/brightness.
However, this still doesn't work for adjusting the
OK, any updates there??
Still no luck with 2.6.24-18-generic, which was kind of expected :)
I'll try to build a custom kernel today... maybe this is fixed in the fresh
upstream version?
Anyway, this bug _needs_ more attention.
BTW, the backlight resets when the ACPI modules are loaded. Also,
