UPDATE: I installed Gizmo 5 from the Medibuntu.org repo and the audio
worked on the first shot. I noticed that the Gizmo audio config was
setup a little different than the default I got using the deb from the
Gizmo Project website.
Here's what's working for me. (Does not require changes to the

I had the same problem with Ubuntu 8.10 and Gizmo. I just went ahead and
configured Ekiga to use my Gizmo account. Now I have zero audio problems
(actually Gizmo was the only one).

I had a very similar problem for the longest time with Hardy. It wouldnt allow
concurrent musicp laying. Earlier today the damn sound just stopped working
altogether, even after restart.

had a similar problem from a fresh installation of Intrepid Ibex: sound worked
at first, but after several applications use sound simultaneously (especially
Flash), the sound drops out. Logging out/killing the X-session wasn't enough,
so I usually rebooted. Found a similar bug report dealing
itismike's fix, which was suggested by Gizmo Support, realy works!!
I had the same problem: sound works only in one sound-required program,
and collapse when I need sound in the other one.
Now I have sound in all programs I need.

The friendly folks at Gizmo Support walked me through disabling PulseAudio:
System Preferences Sound; change all options from Auto-Detect to ALSA.
This seems to help. I'm puzzled why PulseAudio is enabled by default if it
can't handle multiple audio streams(?)

RythmBox isn't the only application that this is happening with. I was
considering submitting another bug, but it seems that the problem that
I'm having is the same underlying problem.
I can play music through Amarok, and use firefox 3b5 fine, but somehow I think
firefox grabs the sound device
Sorry to be impatient, but what is the best solution to this? It happens to me
on both my home and work machines (two completely different platforms), and it
happens between dissimilar applications, so I don't think it's unique to my
setup.

This is because PulseAudio accesses the sound hardware directly, and not
through dmix. You may consider either disaqbling pulseaudio, or
reconfiguring it to use dmix.
