another info that the bug-fixers might be interested in...
i don't know how (probably i installed a package needed to compile torcs
- maybe xf86... something), but last week the backlight was not turning
off.
BUT, after a upgrade, the problem came back!
here is the diff of the list of installed

You received
According to your Xorg.0.log -intel driver has found a backlight control. Could
you please post the output of ls -l /sys/class/backlight/acpi_video0.
You could also try to remove the backlight module. Change to console (ctrl +
alt + f1) while gdm is running and remove the module with rmmod
i followed your instructions, but it did not solve the problem.
attached you can find the generated xorg.conf with the extra Option
ForceEnablePipeA true line.
what i noticed in xorg.0.log is this:
(II) intel(0): Output configuration:
(II) intel(0): Pipe A is on
(II) intel(0): Display plane
Then it doesn't seem to be a Pipe-A problem. You can remove this option.
You could also try a new driver. There is an unofficial package
http://people.ubuntu.com/~bryce/Testing/intel/hardy-i386/xserver-xorg-
video-intel_2.3.1-1ubuntu1~bwh3_i386.deb (AMD64
thanks, i'll try out the new driver, and attach the log later.
for now, i can attach current xorg.0.log and xorg.conf after dpkg-
reconfigure.
as i am looking at the log file, would it be possible that the problem
is caused by the driver using Output VGA as the primary device, and
hence the LCD

i tried the new driver, but i could see no difference.
i am attaching the xorg.0.log and xorg.conf after another
reconfiguration of xserver-xorg

Your issue might be a Pipe A problem.
The fix for this issue is to quirk your card to force enabling Pipe A. Please
regenerate your xorg.conf with the command sudo dpkg-reconfigure
xserver-xorg by confirming every question with enter. Afterwards try setting
the option Option ForceEnablePipeA
