Happy to say I found a page on support.mozilla.com that provided a way
of restoring the buttons properly:

So after following the instructions in the Reset toolbars and controls
section, Firefox now has the
Further to my posting of yesterday, I hae found that by pressing F11
twice - i.e. toggling full-screen off and on - Firefox gets its top bar
buttons. This gives a workaround and hopefully provides a clue as to the
nature of the cause.

I find that only Firefox is affected (under Linux 8.10), all my other
applications behave as they should.
If I have multiple Firefox windows plus other applications open and only
want to close an individual browser window, I can either Alt+F4 whilst
viewing it, or Alt+Tab to a non-Firefox window
