Indeed, there is a problem on Intrepid to install debug packages of firefox. They should update the debug packages in order to be installable. I've added the repositories listed in the first link but, as you say, I have a dependency problem and I'm not sure how to get round it - I don't understand when you say 'select the first option (which does not uninstall ubuntu-desktop)'. :-/ I ran sudo apt-get install firefox-3.0-dbgsym gdb and it says that gdb is at the latest level but that: The following packages have unmet dependencies. firefox-3.0-dbgsym: Depends: firefox-3.0 (= 3.0~b5+nobinonly-0ubuntu3) but 3.0.3+build1+nobinonly-0ubuntu0.8.04.1 is to be installed E: Broken packages I have the newest version of firefox-3.0 Can you tell me what I need to do to resolve the dependency and I'll get the backtrace? Please, try to obtain a backtrace by following the instructions on https://wiki.ubuntu.com/DebuggingProgramCrash. (install notably packages 'firefox-3.0-dbgsym' and 'gdb'.
