A new major version of the -intel driver is now available in Karmic.
This version includes a major reworking of the acceleration
architecture, which resolves a huge number of issues. We do not know
whether it resolves the issue you reported.

I have the same problem here (just upgraded to intrepid). My card is
00:02.0 VGA compatible controller: Intel Corporation 82852/855GM
Integrated Graphics Device (rev 02). Totem playback is as descripted,
but mplayer -vo xv plays along just fine.
On another machine I have (ATI card with oss driver
Dunno. I don't have enough expertise to trace down the problem to its
roots. Evidence seems to suggest that prime suspect is xserver-xorg-
video-intel, but on the other hand, the problem presents only with totem
(and not with mplayer), so maybe it's a mix of the three layers
involved...

Maybe it's a driver issue and not a totem one?
I reported the problem on totem and then moved it to compiz. Do you
think it might better fit into xserver-xorg-video-intel?
