For a Single Head System, you are all right that the xorg.conf file can and will work correctly if created running in Sudo or gksudo this is true for the 180. 185. and the new 190. if you are using Ubuntu 64-Bit 9.04 and 9.10 versions. But this only works for a single-head systems. Once you try to configure a dual-head card or trying to activate two screens it will not save your changes at all. Can someone please try running Ubuntu 9.10 latest version, use a Ge-force 9500gt card and try to configure up 2 screens one for crt and the other s-video for TV out and you will see what I mean. You cant even configure a Twinview. The Geforce 9500gt card has 2 DVI and 1 S-video tv-out. How do you configure a dual head system. @Eddie: It sounds like you've got a completely different issue from the problem described in this bug (crashes on clicking 'save' in nvidia-settings). This bug already has over 100 comments (and is still unfixed) -- if it turns into a grab bag of miscellaneous nvidia-settings complaints, it will become even more impossible for developers to read than it already is. I've been following this bug for quite a while and it is pretty clear that this is *NOT* a permissions problem. I've always run nvidia- settings with gksudo / sudo and the problem was always there. So please don't mark as fixed because of permissions. in my xorg.conf i had to add Device Default Device save then sudo nvidia-settings and them im able to save to x configuration. that's my work around. Did you try to customize your monitors without save to X and see what happens after reboot? The settings are not saved. Saving to xorg.conf is essential to save your multi-monitor configuration with an Nvidia card as far as I have been able to determine. The problem occured in both Jaunty and now Karmic Beta. Daniel Holbert's Fix (added line Device Default Device under the Screen section) worked perfectly both times. I was also experiencing the same issue with saving to xorg.conf via sudo nvidia-settings command. nvidia-xconfig yeiled same results.. Peculiar ! I then decided to try v.173 drivers with no success (flashing screen before and after sudo nvidia-xconfig and sudo nvidia-settings) I then had to boot in console mode to remove v.173 drivers. using sudo apt-get remove nvidia-glx-173 I then used sudo apt-get install nvidia-glx-185 to reinstall drivers in console mode (no X) . Works! Server Layout option was present in etc/x11/xorg.conf after install and reboot without the need for sudo nvidia-xconfig and sudo nvidia-settings commands.. Running dual monitors perfectly after configuring them through the nvidia-settings gui and saving (sudo priv necessary as always) I would suggest this method if previous tactics fail. Well so much for all that. After submitting above comments I was alerted with the crash warning.. Weird that it took a while, However settings are saved as they should.Everything works and saves correctly but a crash warning is issued some time after successfully editing and saving to xorg.conf. There's actually a HUGELY simple fix for this. The error message given indicates that xorg.conf is failing to validate because Screen doesn't reference a device, basically. Got the bug today with a fresh install Karmic (20090916) Since in Karmic there are no xorg.conf file exists in the /etc/X11 directory anymore, nvidia-settins doesn't like that. :( (Tried create an empty xorg.conf file, no good) In the end, you will need to run: sudo nvidia-xconfig Then, gksudo nvidia-settings Everything will work after that. This is so silly - The file /etc/X11/xorg.conf is write protected for a user and the process doing the update requires that the file ALREADY exist before the update. So we have to manually remember to create it before using the nvidia tool. I can confirm that the crashing behavior as originally reported in this bug, and the permissions issue reported later in the comments, still exist in Jaunty beta as of 15-Feb-09. Jaunty prompted me to report the crash, and I did so (as bug 329742) but it was rejected by the apport retracing service and the bug report was marked invalid. I have just updated (and rebooted just to be sure). The menu entry: System-Administration-NVIDIA X Server Settings does not ask for a super-user pasword. So consequently it can't write to /etc/X11/xorg.conf. I fixed the problem by first getting the nvidia settings setup perfectly the way I want it. I then deleted the xorg.conf and wrote the settings to the file from within Nvidia setup.
