using a chipset that AMD no longer supports with -fglrx, so we are
closing this bug report as unsupported. For this hardware, it is
recommended that you use the -ati video driver. If you have trouble
uninstalling -fglrx and
thats right.. i solved the problem with NVIDIA, hehe (sorry).

Same problem here. On-board ATI RS690M [Radeon X1200 Series]. Using
fglrx driver that comes with Ubuntu 8.10-amd64 . Fullscreen OpenGL
programms only work when run as root. Adding myself to the 'video'
group does _not_ help.

But I still see color stripes instead of normal image.

Adding yourself to the 'video' group seems to do the trick:
# gpasswd -a user video
Remember to restart afterwords.

Same here (Ubuntu 8.10 upgraded from 8.04, ATI X1250, fglrx from oficial
proprietary drivers)
This only happen whith fullscreen opengl applications, windowed opengl
apps works OK (like Google Earth). 3D games runing in Wine also have
that problem.
