[Bug 310272] Re: switch user function does not always work
For Jaunty we've moved on to -180, and there are no plans to SRU a newer version for Intrepid (as per the SRU team policies, binary proprietary drivers cannot be updated in stable releases.) You can obtain newer versions of this driver from nvidia's site. Andrew, the symptoms of this issue are generated when DRI is unavailable for some reason. However DRI is implemented completely differently in -nvidia and -intel, and issues are supported in different ways, so it would be best if you file a separate bug for your issue. There's little we can do about this problem with -nvidia, but there is still hope with -intel. ** Changed in: nvidia-graphics-drivers-177 (Ubuntu) Status: Confirmed = Won't Fix -- switch user function does not always work https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/310272 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

Bryce, I'm sorry, I thought this was one I'd reported for -intel. Further discovery - after trying to switch user the last lines of dmesg are: [ 389.028025] [drm:drm_release] *ERROR* reclaim_buffers_locked() deadlock. [Bug 310272] Re: switch user function does not always work
It's a problem in Jaunty. When I try to switch user I get a popup with: Cannot start new display The X server failed. Perhaps it is not configured well. It occurs independent from the presence of my xorg.conf . ** Changed in: xorg (Ubuntu) Status: Fix Released = Confirmed -- switch user function does not always work https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/310272 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

Sounds like this is long since fixed. [Bug 310272] Re: switch user function does not always work
Same problem here. Upgraded to 8.10 a few days ago. Can no longer get Switch User to work. System - Log Out - Switch User: does not take me to the user selection screen. Sometime I get a dialog box saying: Cannot start new display - There were errors trying to start the X server Debuging: 1. dmesg | tail shows nothing of interest 2. tail /var/log/messages shows nothing of interest 3. There seem to be nothing of interest in /var/log/Xorg.0.log ... strange ... Let me know if there is somewhere else I can look an post more debug details. Well... something of interest turned up: Due to an unrelated problem, I decided to try kernel version: (uname -a) Linux Komputor 2.6.24-22-generic #1 SMP Mon Nov 24 18:32:42 UTC 2008 i686 GNU/Linux With this kernel, Switch User *works*. [Bug 310272] Re: switch user function does not always work
I guess the problem caused by faulting of that: Fatal server error: xf86OpenConsole: VT_WAITACTIVE failed: Interrupted system call Anyway I have other issue as well (if related): sometimes shutting down the machine result in continuous beep from PC speaker, and strange screen (eg: purple one), no usplash for shutdowning either, but the beep stops after the while and usplash is there. Again: maybe it's not related, just I guess there is some VT change problem (maybe) in case of starting/stopping X server which cause the problem? I'm about setting this bug as confirmed since Andrew has problem as well. -- switch user function does not always work https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/310272 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 310272] Re: switch user function does not always work
I also have this exact problem. I had it in my previous Intrepid installation, which was an upgrade from Hardy. For that and a few other reasons, I reinstalled Intrepid from scratch. At first switch user worked, but now it's broken again, in exactly the way that Gábor describes. lspci -v says 00:02.0 VGA compatible controller: Intel Corporation Mobile 915GM/GMS/910GML Express Graphics Controller (rev 04) Subsystem: Micro-Star International Co., Ltd. Oh yes, and no text consoles either ;( If I switch to one with eg ctrl- alt-f1, only black screen I see till I switch back to X.
