I also have this exact problem. I had it in my previous Intrepid
installation, which was an upgrade from Hardy. For that and a few other
reasons, I reinstalled Intrepid from scratch. At first switch user
worked, but now it's broken again, in exactly the way that Gábor
describes.

lspci -v says

00:02.0 VGA compatible controller: Intel Corporation Mobile 915GM/GMS/910GML
Express Graphics Controller (rev 04)
Subsystem: Micro-Star International Co., Ltd. Device 0121
Flags: bus master, fast devsel, latency 0, IRQ 16
        Memory at fbe80000 (32-bit, non-prefetchable) [size=512K]
        I/O ports at dc00 [size=8]
        Memory at d0000000 (32-bit, prefetchable) [size=256M]
        Memory at fbe40000 (32-bit, non-prefetchable) [size=256K]
Capabilities: [d0] Power Management version 2
        Kernel modules: intelfb

My xorg.conf is empty.

Thanks,
Andrew.
