[Bug 331843] Re: Should never use dialogues

2009-02-22 Thread Alexander Sack
this is by design. The apps need to be fixed to honour the actions
capability of notification daemons. If you have certain apps that are
affected file bugs against them.

The number of programs that need to be patched to use the new system is
going to be very high.

[Bug 331843] Re: Should never use dialogues

2009-02-21 Thread Jacob Peddicord
According to Shuttleworth's post:

http://www.markshuttleworth.com/?p=265

It seems that, unfortunately, individual applications need fixing. I'm
going to re-open this bug because it seems to be a severe usability
issue, no matter if an application doesn't comply with the features of
notify-osd. Are apps supposed to have a notificaiton-daemon version with
actions, and then a version for Ubuntu without? I'm mostly talking about
the software not in the archives (Gwibber) because we can't easily apply
patches when the software isn't in the archives to begin with.

Tagged as usability.

2009-02-20 Thread Adam Niedling
This is not a bug, it's just a matter of taste, many people like popups.
These kind of suggestions should be sent to brainstorm.ubuntu.com where
people can discuss if it's a good idea or not.

[Bug 331843] Re: Should never use dialogues

2009-02-20 Thread Bruce Cowan
I'll explain why dialogues are a bad idea:

* They are very annoying.
* The actual dialogues are badly implemented just now.
* People might think their system has been comprimised if dialogues keep
popping up without their consent.

[Bug 331843] Re: Should never use dialogues

2009-02-20 Thread Jacob Peddicord
I can support Bruce's claims. I left my desktop for an hour and returned
to find 30 notifications windows opened from Gwibber and cGmail. One
could claim that these need fixed in individual applications, but within
the current timeline that is not feasible. What if there was an off-by-
default preference setting to show the dialogs?

Please don't say that the programs should be fixed to not use
notifications with buttons, as this just makes the upstream-Ubuntu diff
even larger.
