[Bug 371512] Re: [CLE266] [jaunty] Cannot create openchrome XvMC Surface in mythfrontend
This bug report was filed against an old version of Ubuntu. Can you confirm whether this is still an issue in natty? If you don't mind, it would be very helpful if you could update the bug report in launchpad to 'Fix Released' if it is no longer an issue for you, or if it is still occurring under natty, please tag the bug 'natty' so it's easier for us to track. ** Changed in: xserver-xorg-video-openchrome (Ubuntu) Status: Confirmed = New ** Changed in: xserver-xorg-video-openchrome (Ubuntu) Status: New = Incomplete -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/371512 Title: [CLE266] [jaunty] Cannot create openchrome XvMC Surface in mythfrontend -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 371512] Re: [CLE266] [jaunty] Cannot create openchrome XvMC Surface in mythfrontend
Thank you for helping to improve Mythbuntu by opening this ticket. Unfortunately the Mythbuntu team does not foresee a time when they will be able to tackle this issue, so I am closing this ticket. With that being said, if someone else wants to write a patch for this, we will be happy to help push it upstream. Please do not let that action deter you from opening tickets on other issues that you find! ** Changed in: mythtv (Ubuntu) Status: Incomplete = Won't Fix -- [CLE266] [jaunty] Cannot create openchrome XvMC Surface in mythfrontend https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/371512 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 371512] Re: [CLE266] [jaunty] Cannot create openchrome XvMC Surface in mythfrontend
Ok, I installed mythbuntu 9.04 on a separate partition. After checking that the problem still exists, I added the ppa mythtv repository and updated all packages that were available for updating. However, now neither mythtv-setup or mythfrontend will not start anymore: 2009-09-01 23:21:56.201 Loading base theme from /usr/share/mythtv/themes/Mythbuntu-8.04/base.xml 2009-09-01 23:21:56.908 Loading base theme from /usr/share/mythtv/themes/default/base.xml 2009-09-01 23:21:56.985 Unable to load window 'mainmenu' from menu-ui.xml 2009-09-01 23:21:56.985 Couldn't find mainmenu.xml for theme 'blue' 2009-09-01 23:21:56.986 Deleting UPnP client... [Bug 371512] Re: [CLE266] [jaunty] Cannot create openchrome XvMC Surface in mythfrontend
Sorry, hopefully someone else can chime in and help here regarding the status of themes, and/or how to work around this. Multiple people are running 0.22, and it shouldn't matter that most are probably on 9.10. Questions I have about this: Should the theme really be pulled from a directory with Mythbuntu-8.04 in the path? Seems somewhat strange to me. Mitchell Gore said he too had trouble getting the themes correct with the move to 0.22 (if you search the archives for the couldn't find error message) He ended up just pulled them straight from the trunk source tree I think. -- [CLE266] [jaunty] Cannot create openchrome XvMC Surface in mythfrontend https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/371512 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 371512] Re: [CLE266] [jaunty] Cannot create openchrome XvMC Surface in mythfrontend
Marc, you are probably right that this is a better time to get this bug fixed than after the release has been made. Your suggestion to try this in a VM is not workable (I think) because the problem lies with specific hardware support. I doubt that there is any VM that virtualizes the cle266 graphics hardware. So to try this I would need to find some time when the frontend is not in use (which is not all that easy). I will try to do so in the near future. Do you advise to try this on the latest released version (9.04) or on the currently developed one (9.10). Does this make a difference, e.g. when trying to get patches in? -- [CLE266] [jaunty] Cannot create openchrome XvMC Surface in mythfrontend https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/371512 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 371512] Re: [CLE266] [jaunty] Cannot create openchrome XvMC Surface in mythfrontend
Sure - a first step would certainly be to subscribe to the weekly 0.21-fixes as described on the web page above, and 9.04 includes newer openchrome drivers. If it is fixed, there, then it is likely fixed on 0.22. If not, upstream would only be interested if this is still occuring 0.22 though. You could try posting the mythtv-users forum as well to see if others are having trouble, or have hints. [Bug 371512] Re: [CLE266] [jaunty] Cannot create openchrome XvMC Surface in mythfrontend
After spending quite some time investigating this issue, with the conclusion that changes in the way XvMC VLD is used in mythtv is the likely source of this problem. The fact that xine runs smoothly also indicates in this direction. The message Unable to create XvMC Surface. is actually harmless in the way that mythtv uses it, but set me on the wrong foot completely. I was trying to find out the differences in the way mythtv and xine use XvMC when pressure from the family forced me to revert to running the previous version (mythbuntu 7.10 on the backend --now unsupported -- and mythdora 4.0 on the frontend). Things I tried: 1. When upgrading the frontend to mythbuntu 7.10 (years ago) things didn't work smoothly, so back then I decided to use mythdora 4.0. Therefore I tried mythdora 10.21, but unfortunately this gave me the same kinds of errors. See http://www.mythdora.com/?q=node/4768. 2. Since by now I was convinced that this is a mythtv related problem, I asked some questions on the mythtv users mailing list http://www .gossamer-threads.com/lists/mythtv/users/381950?#381950, http://www .gossamer-threads.com/lists/mythtv/users/383536?#383536 with no final resolution. 3. I decided to file a bug report on mythtv, but that quickly went nowhere.http://cvs.mythtv.org/trac/ticket/6624 After this I threw in the towel. I'm still running mythbuntu 7.10 and mythdora 4.0, but I still would very much like to upgrade -- especially since 7.10 is now longer supported, making it impossible to install additional packages. ** Bug watch added: mythtv.org bug tracker #6624 http://svn.mythtv.org/trac/ticket/6624 -- [CLE266] [jaunty] Cannot create openchrome XvMC Surface in mythfrontend https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/371512 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 371512] Re: [CLE266] [jaunty] Cannot create openchrome XvMC Surface in mythfrontend
We all appreciate the effort you've spent on this so far in trying to help improve MythTV (and Mythbuntu). Unfortunately, the developers upstream have stopped focusing on 0.21 and older reports in preparation for a 0.22 release later this year. And as you saw, branch changes must be relatively low risk. As such, right now would be the ideal time to try to get more focus on this bug so that it can go into the 0.22 release. Is there any way that you would be willing to try out an alpha version of 0.22 to see if this bug is still reproducible? It may be possible to try it within a virtual machine so as to not corrupt your existing install. If you can reproduce it, we can retry getting some attention to it upstream. We have builds of mythtv 0.22 available on a PPA to test. Please follow the directions at http://mythbuntu.org/auto-builds to enable them. WARNING: If you intend to revert back to 0.21 after testing (probably not required for VM testing), you will need to back up your database before upgrading.
