In your version of Ubuntu, /usr/bin/screen actually belongs to a package
called screen-profiles, which provides a wrapper around screen.real.
They've gotten rid of the wrapper for future versions of Ubuntu.
In the meantime, you should try chmodding /usr/bin/screen.real, instead.
