I don't know if it's the same issue at hand, but in bug #40503 there are
also things broken during the initial auto-configuration that work fine
when dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg is run manually afterwards.

I also have the same problem with the Ubuntu 6.06 live CD, an LG L1730S
and a graphics card detected as a Radeon R200 QL (not sure about this)
On boot the resolution selected is 640 by 480 and the screen resolution
utility does not let me change it from this.
I resolved this as follows:
