This bug appears to involve a freeze of Xorg, probably due to a GPU
lockup in the kernel drm code, in a version of Ubuntu before
natty (or we couldn't determine the version from the report).
The X team has been investigating GPU lockups in Intel's video driver
during the natty development cycle.
Hi, I too am experiencing random freezes on my Dell Dimension 2400 with
Intel 82845G/GL/GE Chipset. Once it freezes I can no longer move the
mouse or type on the keyboard. CapsLock and NumLock both stop working. I
can however SSH into the box fine. I don't see any erros in any of the
logs -

Yeah, same here, none of my buttons work. I have to remote in to
reboot the box. I uploaded the intel debug output, but am working out
of my laptop for now until they fix the issue with the i915 driver.
Switching distributions doesn't work either. I am two seconds from
getting a cheapo pci video
This bug and Bug #456902 seem very similar. I can't suggest any fixes
because I'm a newbie, but my problem is similar to both of these bugs.
One difference, however, is that alt-sysrq-reisub (if that's right)
doesn't work for me. No keyboard or click inputs work. I always have to
power down. When
I returned to Bhubaneswar and updated the kernel to 2.6.31.15.28 and tried
intel driver and the system was freezing as before. Today I updated the kernel
to 2.6.31.16.29 and again switched to intel driver and there is no freeze today
so far. I will report if the system freezes once again.

I am sorry. I was too excited since I could use the browser for many
hours without any freeze but there was one eventually. Please ignore the
previous post.

It loads the i915 driver instead of the i810 driver no matter what i
do... including adding it to blacklist.conf and issuing nomodeset

First after upgrade to 9.10 the screen sometimes froze with the mouse
pointer still moving. Sometimes there where dense white and black
horizontal lines across the entire screen hiding everything.
Finally after a few reboots from remote session putty login from
another computer the screen
I have looked at bug 456902. There is no need to turn off Desktop
Effects since this PCI ID [8086:2562] is blacklisted in COMPIZ. I have
also tried 'nomodeset' while booting and the freeze still takes place.
I move from place to place and use whatever machines available at that
place. This bug

Btw, there is a similar bug report for the same chipset at bug 456902.
However, for bugs like this it is really hard to say if the bugs are
different or not, so we prefer to treat them separately until it's
proved that they are the same. So please don't mark this bug report as a
duplicate of that
