Robbie, when you run gnome-volume-control-applet you get the old notification area icon which we don't start in lucid, the description of you issue simply suggest you removed the applet which contain all the indicators -- Sound indicator icon has disappeared

My issue came down to the fact that I had removed indicator-session from my panel in a previous release because it wasn't doing anything relevant to me, and I didn't realize this was the same thing as the current indicator-session. So not hardware-specific, and not a bug that I can see. --
