the transparency issue also exists when enabling the OTR plugin in
Pidgin. It seems that all icons in menus in Pidgin are/were missing the

Marc, Xchat shows the correct background but the icon itself isn't correspondig
well with the new light-theme. The colour should be grey instead of orange to
fit nicely in the panel (see above screenshot).

The Xchat issue is a different issue, you should file a new bug for it.
This bug is for non-transparent icon backgrounds.
By default, most users will be using the indicator-applet. The pidgin
notification icon is there for users who expressly turn it on.

new bug-report for Liferea or are you going to send them to the regular
lucid-repos anyway?
