alsamixer just shows me master, pcm and capture. although i don't see
any snd-hda-intel in /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base.conf

After some googling I found this workaround:

Instead of modifying modprobe.conf I edited alsa-base.conf, and after fiddling
around in sound controls and plugging and unplugging the headphone jack I got
them to work.

I installed the linux alsa driver package from the PPA, and still no
change, so I am open to suggestions, as is my family.. They don't like
my music nearly as much as I do :)
