Same problem here:
I installed a vanila Ubuntu Lucid Lynx 10.04 and updated everything using
apt-get.
Then I installed KDE and up to this point, everything works normal.

Update: The issue is not Kubuntu or KDE specific. In what can only be
described as the actions of a desperate man I downloaded and installed
the official Ubuntu with Gnome. Fresh install, same symptoms after

low res splash should be done there, and this bug *only* tracks low res
splash, if you can't boot to the login screen with the nvidia
