Please boot without quiet splash to see where it hangs. Also, wait as
long as 5 minutes to see if you get a busybox shell.

no boot on Kernal images post linux-image-2.6.17-6-386 on Dell Inspiron 7500
It hangs as shown in the attached picture. After 5 minutes, I do get a
busybox shell. It is complaining about not being able to mount
/dev/hda2. In /dev, I don't have any hd*, but I do have sd* instead.
So, it is clear that the upgrade path is foobared. So, the only fix is
to patch /etc/fstab
Spoke too soon... my fstab is OK, but my menu.lst had the following
entry for kernel option:
# kopt=root=UUID=5c0c84ae-d485-4e96-aa6a-6213771f6eda ro
# kopt_2_6=root=/dev/hda2 ro
The UUID is correct, but he kopt_2_6 was taking precedence and all the
kernels were using the root=/dev/hda2 instead
Right known issue with the installer. Already reported on proper
packages.

I can confirm this. I have an Athlon box that had edgy and was recently
dist-upgraded to feisty. The old kernel (linux-image-2.6.17-10-generic)
boots fine, but the two new ones linux-image-2.6.19-7-generic and linux-
image-2.6.20-2-generic hang after discovering the mouse.
