Yes, the START=yes is there in /etc/default/thinkfan.
After reporting the bug I found that thinkfan does work properly from time to
time and then I don't have to start it manually. I have no idea when and why
this is the case but what I can say is that also the energy saving mechanism

I have found out that thinkfan just did'nt autostart anymore. After
starting it manually as root everything works as expected.
