I am now running Ubuntu 12.04 beta1 updated and the same thing - the
webcam is not recognised..
Is there a value in me running apport collect again??

I'm afraid I have to say Me too, and attach to this bug report.
Maybe it's early to get into it, but when I record from an ANALOG mike (since
the USB's unavailable) the SoundRecorder's playback sounds like mice talking.
I've no idea why this would be, but Onery Ocelot has brought MANY little,
SORRY: In my case the webcam (video) is properly identified, but the
mike is wrong. I have two choices, internal or webcam mike, and I
have to switch back-n-forth several times just to get the illusion of it
working: once I open an app (GoogleTalk) it's clear it's not working.
But I think this
tested with the latest mainline i386.deb
that is:
linux-image-3.1.0-030100rc10-generic_3.1.0-030100rc10.201110200610_i386.deb
and the webcam is still not recognised

then change the status of this report to confirmed:
apport-collect 886954
That will add relevant system information and log files to your report.
After you do that a member of the kernel team should give you further
