[Bug 889706] Re: gnome-shell randomly crashes
Thank you for reporting this bug to Ubuntu. Ubuntu 12.04 LTS reached End of Life in April. See this document for currently supported Ubuntu releases: https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Releases Please upgrade to Ubuntu 16.04 LTS and re-test. If the bug is still reproducible, increase the verbosity of the steps to recreate it so we can try again. I apologize that we are not always to respond to bug reports promptly. Do feel free to report any other bugs you may find. ** Changed in: gnome-shell (Ubuntu) Status: Confirmed => Invalid ** No longer affects: gnome-shell ** Package changed: fedora => gnome-shell ** No longer affects: gnome-shell -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/889706 Title: gnome-shell randomly crashes To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/linuxmint/+bug/889706/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

Cinnamon likes "flickering" without any trace in the dmesg or elsewhere, this mostly happens when I open new windows (e.g. Skype), when there's a trace: 60% of the time I get a trap int 3 and Cinnamon restarts itself (Every cinnamon related interface disappears, all windows are visible on top of each other, then only the background is visible, and then everything's back to normal, just like when you [alt+f2] [r] [enter] (what is it called? :)).) 25% of the time I get a trap int 3 and I have to manually restart it from tty 15% of the time I get a segfault and I have to manually restart it from tty When I restart it from tty I use these commands after laggi^Wlogging in: export DISPLAY=:0.0; cinnamon --replace The newest related lines from dmesg: Just "flickering": [ 2822.840995] cinnamon[1711] trap int3 ip:7f29cf23afdb sp:7fffa7ff82c0 error:0 Had to restart this one from tty (I don't know if the restart caused these lines, or the crash, and these lines are always identical): [ 6551.753348] Assertion failed in ../../../../../../../../drivers/2d/lnx/fgl/drm/kernel/hal_r6xx.c at line: 79 [ 6551.760547] Assertion failed in ../../../../../../../../drivers/2d/lnx/fgl/drm/kernel/hal_r6xx.c at line: 79 [ 6551.767633] Assertion failed in ../../../../../../../../drivers/2d/lnx/fgl/drm/kernel/hal_r6xx.c at line: 79 [ 6551.774692] Assertion failed in ../../../../../../../../drivers/2d/lnx/fgl/drm/kernel/hal_r6xx.c at line: 79 [ 6551.781278] Assertion failed in ../../../../../../../../drivers/2d/lnx/fgl/drm/kernel/hal_r6xx.c at line: 79 [ 6551.788288] Assertion failed in ../../../../../../../../drivers/2d/lnx/fgl/drm/kernel/hal_r6xx.c at line: 79 [ 6551.795600] Assertion failed in ../../../../../../../../drivers/2d/lnx/fgl/drm/kernel/hal_r6xx.c at line: 79 [ 6551.803065] Assertion failed in ../../../../../../../../drivers/2d/lnx/fgl/drm/kernel/hal_r6xx.c at line: 79 I have a Gigabyte (ATI) HD4850 graphics card. [Bug 889706] Re: Gnome-shell randomly crashes
I have a similar/related problem that began occuring after upgrading to ubuntu 12.04, but mine occurs during boot. Approximately 1 out of 5 times, the boot fails with a segfault in libfreetype.so.6.8.0 when gnome-shell starts up. It exibits 2 different symptoms. To recover from either, I ctrl+alt+f2 login and reboot. Have not tried any of the other restart options or fixes yet, but will report results when available. Once system is started correctly, I have never had gnome-shell crash on me. The relevent sections of the dmesg output is shown below. [Bug 889706] Re: Gnome-shell randomly crashes
Thanks for the feedback Hugo. I am using Gnome Shell, but F2 on its own doesn't bring up the run dialog. I typically use Alt-F2 and the press r to restart gnome shell. However, this doesn't work when I experience the symptoms described in this bug report. I have to do Ctrl-Alt-Backspace and restart my entire gnome session (which, obviously, is a pain). I am hesitant to upgrade to latest gnome shell, because some people in this thread said it didn't help and I don't want my system to become more unstable than it already is. One other point. I was using Gnome 3 without this freezing issue for several months in Fedora 16. I had even installed some of the MGSE extensions on my Fedora system. If a crash happens the shell should restart itself. Sometimes it doesn't (what seems like what you described). You can also try installing the newest Gnome-shell via ppa: ppa:gnome3-team/gnome3 You system may be more unstable this way but I did it and nothing changed for me. (There will be a lot more updates with this ppa.) The problem with MATE is that it's not developed anymore as far as I know. :( (But that doesn't mean you can't still use it. :)) ** Description changed: NOTICE: If your problem no longer occurs, please report your graphics card/integrated graphics. [Bug 889706] Re: Gnome-shell randomly crashes
I am using LInux Mint 12 x64, Gnome Shell version 3.2.2.1. Laptop: Lenovo T61, Graphics: Intel 965GM. I have been experiencing this problem since installing Linux Mint nearly 2 months ago. I have tried solutions 1 and 3, but crashes still occur. That is, various applications in the gnome shell and the shell itself will be unresponsive, and then eventually (within 5-10 seconds) all the windows become unresponsive. Alt-F2 doesn't work. I have to restart using Ctrl-Alt-Backspace. I would say this happens on average once a day for me. In case this is relevant, the application I run regularly are Chrome, Thunderbird, and Terminal. I frequently switch between virtual desktop, but I don't think the crashes happen exclusively when I do this. I'm pretty close to just scrapping gnome shell and using MATE instead. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/889706 Title: Gnome-shell randomly crashes To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/linuxmint/+bug/889706/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

That did not help. [Bug 889706] Re: Gnome-shell randomly crashes
I had lots of such crashes in Gnome-shell (3.0 or 3.2, did not test with 3.4). See comment #236 I suspected a mis-behaviour in how modal windows operate. Indeed, switching the way they are attached to the parent window completely solved the problem. More details here : http://gnomeshell.wordpress.com/2011/09/10/the-modal-windows-behavior/ I haven't had any more crashes for the last 3 or 4 weeks, after "detaching" the modal windows. [Bug 889706] Re: Gnome-shell randomly crashes
UPDATE: I booted into recovery mode, ran sudo apt-get remove fglrx. Booted into mint12, installed the full catalyst drivers (12.3) direct from ATI website. This fixed the Italic tooltips for me and seems to have reduced the Shell crashes but they are still present. I'm having the same problem with an ATI Radeon HD 4570, latest catalyst proprietary drivers and fully updated Linux Mint 12 - 3.0.0-12-generic. I want to know why this is marked as "fixed" for Mint 12. Obviously it is not or no fix has been released yet. Does this Issue relate to gnome- shell? If so, is it fixed in gnome-shell 3.4?
