As far as I can tell from a quick test, this seems to work. I think.
The resulting desktop is--sparse, with only an open terminal, no
xubuntu-desktop or anything. Not what I expected or hoped for, but
perhaps WAD?

I understand the point about light-weight. But the other point behind
Ubuntu is it Just Works. I've looked at some of the HOWTOs (e.g.,

James, with javaws -version i get the help of javaws, whatelse.
But, i try my command with verbose mode :

The xulrunnerpatch didn't fix the bug for me. I had to disable the offscreen
pixmaps to get rid of the bug.

My hardware is an IBM Thinkpad R60. Ubuntu 7.10 and Sound Juicer 2.20.1

I take it back, installing and running x11vnc pretty much did what I
wanted. The only catch is that it doesn't seem to install any kind of
menu item, so you have to just know it's there and run it yourself.

Xubuntu needs a VNC server
The ChenMing's solution is very nice for me (either on desktop that
laptop). I have changed only eth and gw's ip number:

I would still tend to agree with your earlier analysis: the fact that it
doesn't do what it's supposed to do is this bug, and the fact that it
would be nice to be able to turn it off is a separate bug.
What would be a suitable mechanism for turning it off if desired? I
don't particularly like
100 Hz refresh rate is still missing in Hardy's and Gutsy's

I can attach output of ddcprobe and other command's if you need, just tell me
what I need to do.
AFAIK X in Hardy doesn't use ddcprobe/xresprobe in Ubuntu Hardy, right ?

via DHCP. But now it already has an address, yet is still 'spinning'.

I just realized that this _might_ be relevant: I've made my
/etc/resolv.conf file unwritable by doing chattr +i
/etc/resolv.conf. (I did this to avoid an unrelated problem: my DHCP
server is sorta on drugs, and always tells my Ubuntu machine to use a
bogus DNS server ... it's a long story ...)

With today updates the problem seems fixed.no more crashes (at least on
ebay signon).

I have no idea why it changed, but the reason is that the USB-key is now
/dev/sdc and not /dev/sdb
So it is working agian.
