Paul's fix also worked for me. Seems like a pretty silly reason for
mysql to crash.

I ran into this same problem when I tried to upgrade 11.10 to 12.04, same
changes fixed the problem
I ended up doing something like:
commenting out the
`UPGRADER_DIR=dists/$CODENAME/main/dist-upgrader/binary-all` line. (put a #
infront of it)

Well, the difference between update-amanger refusing the upgrade and running
through was disabling the fglrx binary driver.
The PPA that had the driver you see in the logs was never used to install the
fglrx driver. The non canonical PPAs where my first guess of course, so I
disabled them all
I could remove the 100% device hwC0D0 usage in PowerTop by playing with my
mixer switches (Mic feedthrough to Main, etc.). However, this did not change
my idle power usage by any significant amount.

Seeing the same thing here too. Upgraded a virtual-machine to 12.04, and
now when I try to connect to it from an 11.10 system via XDMCP I get the
same crash

I also had this problem with ubuntu 12.04 and mysql-server 5.5, and
Paul's fix also worked for me. Seems like a pretty silly reason for
mysql to crash.
