I was able to reproduce this bug on a Pentium 4 with a GeForce 6600.
Installing nvidia-304 rather than updates gives the exact same problem.
I will try to reproduce it with a different 6600 to see if it has to do
with the maker (my current card is a PNY).

I saw the same kind of warnings with the Ubuntu GNOME i386 20161012
image when run in GNOME Boxes which I understand is qemu with spice. I
just manually power off the VM at that point.

card because the internal storage has windows on it and its too small
for 2 OS. I tried the 16.04 LTS and it had this problem, then i tried
one of the daily builds(the bug report came from that).

(20161012) [1], which prevents boot after an install.
Tested the yakkety release (16.04) [2] and first point release (16.04.1)

Yesterday we had kernel updates. My server, which is set to
automatically reboot, reboot fine and no /var/run/reboot-required. This
morning there was no second reboot, so everything was as expected. The I
ran autoremove to remove the stale kernel. Then I had /var/run/reboot-

I do not believe yaboot has in active development in a long time
upstream. The last set of commits were in 2008 see:

I think we are just stuck with make a separate ext2 /boot partition.

Installation of jackd2 ran into a problem because it prompts, but, it
never showed the prompt when running from the GUI installer. When I

I have the same problem.
I will "fix" my system now by "making /var/run a symlink to /run." as
Steve suggested. Unfortunately "Ubuntu" has not been doing that for me
in my case. The two paths are separate directories. Only /run is a
tmpfs. /var/run is on the root filesystem.

The issue is still present with 4.4.0-42. It's completely preventing me
from booting into Ubuntu. The error message is as follows:
lvmetad is not active yet, using direct activation during sysinit
rootfs: clean, 271911/1831424 files, 1561286/7323648 blocks
Here, "rootfs" is my root filesystem
I edited the title, as it applies to desktop installs of xenial (such as
mine) as well.

By the way this is almost certainly an upstream bug because headphone
jack is also not working on several other distributions I tested, none
of them are Ubuntu based so this bug goes beyond Ubuntu.

Xorg does not utilize the
It's got something to do with the kernel. Done a quick test using the
latest kernel 4.4.0-42-generic. Restarted my pc and logged in. Opened
terminal and mem usage was 1.8gb.
Done the same with the latest 4.8.1 kernel from ubuntu kernels page and
the usage was only 673mb.
Crazy!
