I upgraded to BIOS 1.5.0 yesterday and also upgraded the dock firmware
yesterday as well again (using windows-10-on-the-go usb stick I created
just for that purpose).
No improvements - I got a nice freeze on boot again (kernel 4.12.13).
Also, Windows 10 seems to be working on the same hardware
Issue persists for 10.1.23. The test cases and failures are the same as
originally described in this thread.

I updated to latest packages.
I installed gnome-session
In gnome-session I installed Tweaks.
After changing the Theme (Applications) to Radiance of Ambiance, there is no
option to choose the default Gnome theme.

The scrambling issue has repeated itself since my initial bug report. At
the time that it happened, I was only after booting was completed and I
couldn't see or do anything with my laptop until I suspended it with the
power button. On another occasion a few weeks ago, this same issue
occurred and
I need to correct myself from the last post I just did: the scrambling
*hasn't* happened again. That was a wording mistake on my part. My
apologies.

Sorry to inform you that GIMP snap does not seem to be a solution for
me: it is way too slow with respect to the buggy GIMP (more than 5 times
slower?).
I do not wish either to compile both GIMP and GEGL 2.0, as this last one
is not offered any more by Ubuntu/Xubuntu.
