Hi Christoph, thank you very much for your work in this LP! Both the
debug part and finally your patch. I was looking the same set of issues
in parallel, with another user that reported the same crashes.
So, regarding your question in comment #15 ("are those gonna be
backportet to 4.x-generic?"),
Still fails to build with 5.2, albeit with different errors. Note that
there is a 5.2 build in https://launchpad.net/~canonical-kernel-
team/+archive/ubuntu/unstable/.

The mentioned Workaround helped me on my physical machine running Ubuntu
18.04.

Every once and then, while using the system normally, the Xwayland
server suddendly restarts, closing all existing windows, and brings me
back to the gdm3 login screen.

I checked the feedback in the Feedback Hub and there is not any more
information there either about the issue. The issue seems to be in WSL,
not in Ubuntu and it can't be fixed in Ubuntu packages. :-(
