having with getting the video card operating properly. But thanks to

Based on my experience above, I can say with good degree of certainty
that the LibreOffice was the culprit. I will restart the entire machine

The successful test to boot into recovery mode provides
a very good lead; thanks for coming up with that.
These are the 3 kernel options added by the recovery mode,
per the kern.log
Good catch Mauricio!
1. "nomodeset" did not help.
2. "dis_ucode_ldr" succeed.
The logs after the successful boot are attached.
What can I do to make the boot use "dis_ucode_ldr" by default?

I am dealing with exactly the same issue: I am running Gnome on a fresh
install of Ubuntu 20.04 on a Lenovo Thinkpad X1 Carbon 7th gen. I have
an external monitor (also a Lenovo), and when I connect it (through
USB-C), everything works fine. However, when I disconnect it, the
system freezes
Interesting.
For that you can add 'dis_ucode_ldr' in GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT in
/etc/default/grub.
Then run 'sudo update-grub', and confirm the change with 'grep dis_ucode_ldr
/boot/grub/grub.cfg'.
You should see non-recovery lines w/ that option as well.

An error message stated grub could not be installed, but was. The
installation seemed complete, but there are shared lib errors and
installed applications were not listed in usr/share/applications.
