I somehow convinced myself we got this patch into the upstream 20.03.2
point release, and evidently that is not the case. I want to offer my

I think I found out the cause, I had Ubuntu Dock enabled while having
Dash to Panel enabled. Ubuntu Dock may have been turned on during
upgrade (as I had turned it off months ago). I'll keep testing and
report back after going through a logout/login and a full reboot.

In the current kerenl. So it appears that building with a dkms module got
dropped, and yet the guest modules from upstream code have not been built
either.
And i am able to reproduce
./fs/vboxsf is not available in v5.4 kernel.

virtualbox got SRUed into focal that drops virtualbox-guest-dkms
virtualbox-guest-dkms (among other modules) used to provide vboxsf which
src:linux used as source to build & sign vboxsf.
vboxsf is also available in upstream vanilla kernels from v5.6+
to continue building
