I had this problem and I found that it was actually cause by my cups server being down. If you run sudo /etc/init.d/cups restart then hp-setup will work and find the PPD file for my printer. Hope this helps. -- error: No PPD found for model officejet_pro_l7700

I think some automatic update made my machine install some other drivers from backports. I installed the ALSA drivers as explained in comment 2 by Luke above and it's working again (using Microphone 2 in the Sound options for input). I don't know if this is an inconsistent state and I will stop

Luke, My apologies. It actually does fix the problem. But after updating the drivers I need to change the connector in System - Preferences - Sound - input - Connector. The new drivers show 2 connectors there: Microphone 1 and Microphone 2. While the old drivers shown only one microphone.
