I had this problem and I found that it was actually cause by my cups
server being down. If you run
sudo /etc/init.d/cups restart
then hp-setup will work and find the PPD file for my printer.
Hope this helps.

It seems that you have to run gnome-ppp as root.
Right click on Applications in the Gnome panel. Select Edit Menus -
Internet - Gnome PPP - Properties - Command: gksudo gnome-ppp
Hope this helps.

I think some automatic update made my machine install some other drivers
from backports.
I installed the ALSA drivers as explained in comment 2 by Luke above and
it's working again (using Microphone 2 in the Sound options for input).
I don't know if this is an inconsistent state and I will stop
It's broken again. Now I can find only one microphone in System -
Preferences - Sound - input - Connector. I am without sound.

Hi Luke.
Yes, I installed updates. I install any updates that the Update Manager
tells me to. And as far as I remember, I updated the kernel.
Any logs I should look at?
Thank you.

Luke,
My apologies. It actually does fix the problem. But after updating the
drivers I need to change the connector in System - Preferences - Sound
- input - Connector. The new drivers show 2 connectors there:
Microphone 1 and Microphone 2. While the old drivers shown only one
microphone.
