I doubt it is related to bug 263059. >From reading through the comments on that bug people are having intermittent start-up problems on all the 2.6.2.* kernel packages. I only ever had trouble with the 2.6.27.1 kernel package, and that went away when I upgraded a bunch of other stuff. -- [intrep

Bug has gone away. I did a dist-upgrade last night on my laptop, and it updated a big list of things, including the kernel to 2.6.27.2 (package linux- image-2.6.27-2-generic). When I rebooted with this new kernel everything worked. To confirm if it was the old kernel that was at fault, I rebooted
