Similar sympthoms of Ian Phillips here, after having left PC logged on
for a night long:
Feb 16 08:15:59 df1844j bonobo-activation-server (somebody-30654): could
not associate with desktop session: Failed to connect to socket /tmp
/dbus-0TwjlsrEN7: Connection refused
Screen was blank.
Same problem here with DELL Optiplex 960.
X gets stuck after resuming from screensaver, after a log period of
inactivity (no keyb/mouse input), mostly after a night long. Ctrl+F2,
Ctrl+Alt+Backspace and Ctrl+Alt+Del don't help. Pushing the power
button, it shutdowns gracefully.

I've found a workaround: using Blank Screen as screensaver, X no
longer locks up.

[regression] Built-in mic not working after pulse updates on Karmic.
Manfred, applying your suggestions worked for me, specifically:
Digital Input Source and Digital Input Source 1.
They were both set to Analog. Setting them to Digital fixed my problem.

After having updated from Jaunty-Karmic, and having rebooted as
requested in order to complete the upgrade, i never get to GDM login,
nor X started, but boot process apparently stops early during init
phase. This is what i see on screen:

After network upgrade jaunty-karmic the symlink boot-. in my boot partition
is gone.
So grub menu entries /boot/kernel-2... and /boot/initrd-2. are broken
and OS cannot start.
Expected behavior: being able to boot with default grub menu
I dunno what created that symlink in first place. As far as I remember I've
always seen it there and grub menu entries always had the /boot folder.
Also in my desktop that I use at work has the same setup. But of course I could
have wrong memories... :)

Couldn't get full bt since when compiz crashes under gdb I have to kill
compiz process to regain desktop control.

I have an HDMI Port in my HD Radeon 5700, which also supports sound.
But my VIA Technologies, Inc. VT1708/A onboard soundcard of the asus m2v mx
se, isn't detected.
It's listed in the 'lspci' command, but in the command 'cat /proc/asound/cards'
is only a 'HDA-Intel -
