The subsdec-encoding setting which you can find in the VLC preferences
panel only applies to VLC-decoded subtitles. The Ubuntu VLC package uses
libass instead of native VLC decoding for .ass files, so it ignores the
value. There is no apparent ways to fix this with the current libass

My changes are merely moving VLC from calling gnome-screensaver directly

On Debian GNU/Linux systems, the complete text of the GNU General
Public License can be found in `/usr/share/common-licenses/GPL-2'.
This is actually worse. The same vlc-nox package links against a version
of taglib which is LGPL v2.1 only.
Hence, I believe the package is not legally redistributable as is in
most jurisdiction.

I take back the previous comment. LGPLv2.1 is compatible with GPLv3.
Still anyway, the Ubuntu VLC should be licensed under GPLv3, not GPLv2
unless libsmbclient is dropped.

Fermulator, I think on a high level, everybody would agree. But I think
the problem is that nobody is responsible for fixing this issue.
GNOME guys decided to clean up their API. We can't blame them for doing
so. Of course, users of their APIs (i.e. VLC media player here) were
not notified. But
If it's just a matter of fixing a DBus in VLC, then Ubuntu VLC could
just invoke dbus-send via system(). Obviously, that wouldn't work for
other packages.
And by the way, xdg-screensaver will need to be fixed too, because VLC
1.1 will probably use that.
But again, I would not to blame GNOME too
Well, clearly the kernel guys don't care. I can blame them - HFS+ is
not quite the most common file system on Linux. They haven't fixed it
after over a year. At this point it's clear they are not going to fix it
just for the sake of an Ubuntu bug reports.

vlc always on top does not work when returning from fullscreen
deinterlace-mode sets the deinterlacing mode PROVIDED that deinterlacing
is enabled. It does not enable deinterlacing as such. You need to enable
the deinterlacing filter in the preferences if that's what you want.
