With hindsight it seems to me that the bug here on this machine is that the dash lenses do not show up. The machine only runs 2D, however it is a reasonable speed, there is no problem using Ubuntu. (I have a second testing machine with 3D now so I can see what a dash 'lens' is supposed to do)

@chris Thanks however, at the time of the, problem since firefox would not even start up, I could not see a way of using the normal methods of reporting. No process id for example. and such as ubuntu-bug firefox simply crashed out immediately still again offering only the firefox crash report.

I installed ubuntu 12.04 alpha 1 and then did all updates - although the process was labelled as a partial upgrade. all updates installed. Not long following this I routinely started update manager, and it gave this problem. As things stand, I cannot update the rolling alpha 1 via the update
