nvidia-xconfig was not and is not installed. I didn't think it was
supposed to be, so I checked for contention/dependencies before I took
the error message's suggestion, and reported what I found.

Uninstalled Xgl, reinstalled compiz.
Now nvidia-setting opens properly and will save configuration if run as
root.
Xgl is not and was not installed on my 32bit nvidia/Hardy system, wonder
why and how it was installed on the 64bit?

This occurs in xinerama mode.
Spanning multiple montors in fullscreen may not be desirable, especially
if they are different sizes/resolutions.

I tried Tristan Schmelcher's workaround (2008-07-03) and it failed
causing erratic behavior with windows.
The only thing I can get to work is to execute the following commands
from a terminal, and then every thing works great.
compiz --display :0.0 --only-current-screen --replace
compiz
When using multiple monitors using xinerama and expanding to full screen
using windows decoration maximize button in gnome 2.22.2, Firefox 3.0
maximizes filling both screens. Although this may be desireable in some
cases, in my case and possibly others it is not.

Checked today and the debug messages are gone. The amd64 boots now in
the same amount of time required for x86 to boot. (Hooray).
As requested, I will add the current syslog and messages, and will also
add a archived syslog from 05-JAN-09.

If I delete the errant panel and create a new one on the right edge
identical to the one deleted, it stays there properly. After

No effect still only 1 desktop on screen0.

Set Set Horizontal Virtual Size from 1 to 4, set Set Vertical Virtual
Size from 4 to 1
Now Desktop Cube works.
Have no idea how this setting was changed, I certainly made no change to
this setting, if I did it
