I tried to reproduce and saw I saw a black screen the entire time, which
is good IMO.
Unfortunately, i dont have the original test system i logged this

It's the same for me. Since I've installed a fresh Jaunty Beta (6-7 days
ago) I've never seen the update notification icon in the sys-tray. The
settings say that it should check every day. A couple of times, after
3-4 days, I've checked the update status and I've found hundred of MBs
of packages

I found the reason of this bug. When I try to load a file, there are a

The fix works on my system: WinXpPro + wubi on a Dell Latitude D510. Deleted
insmod ntfs command.

Solved this. The motherboard has a setting preventing the boot record
being overwritten and this was on. When I turned it off and re-
installed, the installation completed and re-booted as it should. The
BIOS is supposed to show a warning saying what was happening, but
didn't.

Xorg didn't have the kbd and mouse drivers installed.
