Skype 4.2 for Linux has been released:
http://blogs.skype.com/2013/05/20/skype-for-linux-4-2/

I couldn't help testing, so I removed the skype and skype-bin packages,
downloaded the provided .deb file and installed it.

It works. :) Without a need to downgrade libqtwebkit4 or apply 'the
LD_PRELOAD workaround'.

[Bug 1155327] Re: skype crashed with SIGSEGV in malloc@plt()

2013-05-07 Thread Richard Brown
Posting just in case anyone has the same experience I had

I thought the fixed skype wasn't working for me on 13.04 (was continuing
to segfault), but then noticed eventually that when my system was
upgraded from 12.10 to 13.04, the Partner repository had not been
updated to raring, and so it was installing skype for the wrong distro.
In particular I had 4.1.0.20.0-0ubuntu0.12.04.2 installed and it took me
a long time to notice the 12 where there should have been a 13!

Correcting the distro to raring brought in the fixed skype.

Or a nvidia issue or a qtwebkit issue... There are several candidates.

I just meant that an issue due to premature use of a new version, before
it has been sufficiently tested for inclusion in Ubuntu, is a special
kind of issue. I did not intend to suggest that this Skype problem
should not be properly fixed. So far we only have a temporary and
somewhat unconventional solution in place, i.e. the LD_PRELOAD
workaround is now in the archive.

2013-05-01 Thread Gunnar Hjalmarsson
@mtvoid: Does it work for you to use the quantal version of
libqtwebkit4?

@pools: What you describe should (in principle) not be possible.
Probably you can make it work by doing

  sudo apt-get install --reinstall libgl1-mesa-glx:i386

But before you try that, can you please clarify the problem by answering a
couple of questions:
* Did you install the latest version of both skype and skype-bin?
* What does the command 'dpkg -l libgl1-mesa-glx' output?
* Does 'ls /usr/lib/i386-linux-gnu/mesa' list any files?

[Bug 1155327] Re: skype crashed with SIGSEGV in malloc@plt()

2013-05-01 Thread mtvoid
@gunnarhj: Yes, I also tried it with both libqtwebkit4 2.2.1 and 2.3.0.
Whatever was causing the problem, seemed to be from the upgrade of some
other package when upgrading to raring. Investigating further with gdb,
I found this:

Program received signal SIGSEGV, Segmentation fault.
0x08075f44 in malloc@plt ()
(gdb) bt
#0 0x08075f44 in malloc@plt ()
#1 0xb4f8a653 in g_malloc () from /lib/i386-linux-gnu/libglib-2.0.so.0
#2 0xb4f8a92b in g_malloc_n () from /lib/i386-linux-gnu/libglib-2.0.so.0
#3 0xb4f93e10 in g_quark_from_static_string ()

#4 0xb5045822 in ?? () from /usr/lib/i386-linux-gnu/libgobject-2.0.so.0
#5 0xb7fed216 in ?? () from /lib/ld-linux.so.2
#6 0xb7fed2fc in ?? () from /lib/ld-linux.so.2
#7 0xb7fdf1df in ?? () from /lib/ld-linux.so.2

That indicated some issue with libglib2.0-0. I was using the latest
GNOME packages, including libglib 2.37.0 from the ricotz testing PPA. I
reverted it back to 2.36.0, and now Skype works again. The issue I was
facing was not related to libGL, and I have resolved it for now. But I
thought of pointing this out, because maybe Skype will still crash for
anybody running with a newer version of glib, irrespective of which
graphics driver they are running.

@costamagnagianfranco: I managed to install skype again removing this and other
files that apt-get was complaining about, thanks.
I tried then to change the LD_PRELOAD path as @Gunnar said:

/usr/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/mesa/libGL.so.1

but the library in not there neither.

I looked for it and I can find it here

/usr/lib/libGL.so.1
/usr/lib/i386-linux-gnu/mesa/libGL.so.1
/usr/lib32/libGL.so.1

which means that now does exist under i386-linux-gnu. Maybe because I
installed ia32-libs? I don't know, I've tried so many things.

Anyway, the line
LD_PRELOAD=/usr/lib/i386-linux-gnu/mesa/libGL.so.1 skype
continues throwing error:
zsh: segmentation fault (core dumped)
LD_PRELOAD=/usr/lib/i386-linux-gnu/mesa/libGL.so.1 skype

and the same error using the other two paths.

What disadvantages do you have in mind? I was thinking that updating
the Exec line in /usr/share/applications/skype.desktop to point to
 'skype-wrapper' would be sufficient.

I have made Skype start automatically at login via Startup Applications,
and my ~/.local/share/applications/skype.desktop (which takes precedence
over /usr/share/applications/skype.desktop) would keep calling skype.
Ok, Startup Applications isn't exactly a hardly promoted feature
nowadays, but I suppose we are a few that somehow have made Skype start
at login.

Also, people are used to be able to just say skype in a terminal window
or in the Alt+F2 command line thing. It's the natural command for
starting an application named skype. :)

For those reasons I for one think that letting the wrapper keep the name
/usr/bin/skype and moving the binary is preferable before renaming the
wrapper and editing .desktop.

the issue in this bug report has been fixed for most users. However, it has
been fixed in the sense that the LD_PRELOAD workaround[1], that has been widely

a temporary measure while awaiting a more proper fix.

[Bug 1155327] Re: skype crashed with SIGSEGV in malloc@plt()

2013-04-29 Thread Bradley M. Froehle
Beware that renaming the skype binary will break it's special
configuration sni-qt.conf --- see #863190 (https://bugs.launchpad.net
/sni-qt/+bug/863190). This means that it will be impossible to re-
activate the skype window once it has been dismissed.

Any SRU here should be done in conjunction with an SRU for sni-qt.

2013-04-29 Thread Gunnar Hjalmarsson
Hi Bradley,

The workaround with a renamed binary is already in raring-proposed:
https://launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/skype/4.1.0.20.0-0ubuntu0.13.04.1

Have you verified that there would be a problem with sni-qt? Please note
that the workaround includes an executable in PATH named skype.

[Bug 1155327] Re: skype crashed with SIGSEGV in malloc@plt()

2013-04-29 Thread Bradley M. Froehle
Hi Gunnar:

Yes, I have tried it by installing the packages you just linked to. I
needed to add the line 'skype-binary=1' to /etc/xdg/sni-qt.conf to get
Skype into a usable state. (Otherwise, as bug #863190 describes there
is no way to send a left click to the status icon which prevents re-
activating the skype window). I should mention that I'm using the
gnome-fallback desktop environment.

Could we put the `skype` binary in a different directory (like
`/usr/lib/skype/`) to avoid renaming it? Or does Skype locating the
other files it needs from the directory of the binary?

[Bug 1155327] Re: skype crashed with SIGSEGV in malloc@plt()

2013-04-29 Thread Gunnar Hjalmarsson
I'm just testing this change:

  sudo mv /usr/bin/skype-binary /usr/share/skype/skype
  sudo sed -r -i s,bin/skype-binary,share/skype/skype, /usr/bin/skype

It seems to work fine, and unlike before the Activate menu item is
visible in Unity.

Arrrg ... How did I not notice this before? (Have been using 'the rename
binary' variant of the workaround daily for quite a while.)

@Bradley: Would the above fix the sni-qt issue as well?

@Steve: You mentioned on IRC that you have a solution in mind. Please
note that anything that would give the shell script another name but
skype would have other disadvantages.

If this solves the sni-qt bug reliably, I suppose this is ok (modulo that
the binary should be installed to /usr/lib/skype, not /usr/share/skype).

@Steve: You mentioned on IRC that you have a solution in mind. Please
note that anything that would give the shell script another name but

What disadvantages do you have in mind? I was thinking that updating the
Exec line in /usr/share/applications/skype.desktop to point to
'skype-wrapper' would be sufficient.

well i also have this bug and own an amd 7870 videocard using the catalyst
driver... i think it is obvious that
every proprietary linux video driver causes this issue.

of course the LD workaround also lets skype start for me, but i have a severe
crackling
on my headset for a few seconds and starting and ending calls does not work
as flawless as it should ...

i tested my headset audio output through audacity and there are no disortions,
so this
is a skype thing ... im not sure if it is connected to the library linking ...

LD workaround is not the root cause for a crackling sound.
I am using libqtwebkit4 libqtwebkit4:i386 from 12.10 on 13.04 to make skype
usuable and have also crackling sound.
I remember that crackling started since upgrading from 12.10 to 13.04 alpha.

Thanks, Steve. Nice to know that the LD_PRELOAD workaround won't likely
cause undesired side effects.

A possibly relevant discussion is going on at

GLib and ld-linux.so are mentioned there as culprit candidates.

I can't tell if that discussion is applicable to our

[Bug 1155327] Re: skype crashed with SIGSEGV in malloc@plt()

2013-04-23 Thread Steve Langasek
I've dug into this issue to try to get a better backtrace from the
crash. In the process I've determined that this is not a bug in
qtwebkit per se. The crash happens before any calls are made into the
qtwebkit library - the mere act of loading the nvidia libGL and calling
its initializers is enough to trigger the crash. So the only relevant
difference between qtwebkit 2.2.1 and 2.3.0 is that 2.3.0 is linked
against libGL.

It is exceedingly unlikely that anything in skype needs to /use/ the GL-
based functionality of QtWebkit. Consequently, the proposed workaround
to bypass the nvidia libGL by preloading the mesa libGL should be a safe
and effective solution.

** Package changed: qtwebkit-source (Ubuntu Raring) = nvidia-graphics-
drivers-304 (Ubuntu Raring)

[Bug 1155327] Re: skype crashed with SIGSEGV in malloc@plt()

2013-04-22 Thread Timo Jyrinki
Marked the #1131636 also as a duplicate of this bug, since this has been
correctly targetted against raring already.

As I mentioned there, I built a 2.3.1 qtwebkit at ppa:canonical-
qt5-edgers/qt5-beta-proper (don't mind the Qt5 packages there and if you
use Qt5 also don't start upgrading from there unless you want unfinished
packages).

However according to other comments 2.3.1 does not have a fix that would
fix Skype for NVIDIA users - LD_PRELOAD still needed. It only fixes a
bunch of other bugs. So there's still no known fix in qtwebkit, only the
known ld_preload workaround in skype. Thanks to Gunnar for creating the
upstream bug report (https://jira.skype.com/browse/SCL-980).

[Bug 1155327] Re: skype crashed with SIGSEGV in malloc@plt()

2013-04-19 Thread Steve Langasek
The latest comment in bug #1131636 suggests that this qtwebkit
regression may have been fixed in the latest 2.3.1 release. So I don't
think we want to put in a hackish workaround in the skype package
(which, for reference, will completely break any actual use of OpenGL
support by WebKit within skype), but instead get the correct upstream
fix for qtwebkit.

2013-04-19 Thread Gunnar Hjalmarsson
Quote from comment #39 in bug #1131636:

I can use qupzilla with javascript and skype as well
(LD_PRELOAD=/usr/lib/i386-linux-gnu/mesa/libGL.so.1 skype)

Please note that frenchy82 is the only person I have noticed who
reported that the LD_PRELOAD workaround did not work for him. So I get
the impression that it was some other problem that was resolved for him
with Qtwebkit 2.3.1, and that he now - unlike before - can start Skype
using the LD_PRELOAD workaround.

I asked for a clarification at the other bug.

Mauricio,

It's applied to the source code, then you rebuild the package and
install the resulting .deb files using dpkg.

But since you need to ask, and assuming that you just want it to work
while waiting for the fix to reach the archive, I recommend that you
follow the advice in comment #30. It's in effect the same thing.

I've looked at the libqtwebkit4 rdepends bug reports, and no similar
crash reports seem to exist for eg. amarok, arora, k3b, ktorrent,

2013-04-12 Thread Jamie Strandboge
Timo, if it is believed it is a Skype-specific bug and there is a
workaround that we can use for skype, then I won't block on a system-
wide workaround for skype (please coordinate with the release team
though). That said, an upstream bug should be filed with skype and
perhaps qtwebkit. I still think this is papering over the issue and that
the proper solution is fixing qtwebkit. (Perhaps that could be uploaded
as an SRU and the skype workaround removed after release).

If this change is going into the skype package, you need someone who can
upload to the partner archive... ubuntu-sponsors is irrelevant here (as is
the release team, actually, partner archive isn't subject to the release

2013-04-12 Thread Jamie Strandboge
Ah, I forgot it was in partner. I had a concern after remembering that
there might be an issue with us updating the package. slangasek on IRC
said we already diverge and can do it, but we should contact upstream
(he would do that). Beyond that, I withdraw my objection to a skype-only
workaround (I have no comment on the merits of this workaround, other
than to say it seems quite odd that this fixes things), but I have no
real insight into why this is a problem. If we employ a workaround, I
suggest updating the debian/changelog and the script to reference the
upstream bug, and adjust the script to use 'exec ...' instead of
backgrounding the process.
