[Bug 1730927] Re: Support the new 280 character limit.
This works after updating to version 1.6-1ubuntu0.1; before updating, characters are stuck at the old limit, while after the update, 280 characters are supported. ** Tags removed: verification-needed verification-needed-artful ** Tags added: verification-done verification-done-artful -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1730927 Title: Support the new 280 character limit. [Bug 1730927] Re: Support the new 280 character limit.
Hello Achim, or anyone else affected, Accepted corebird into artful-proposed. The package will build now and be available at https://launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/corebird/1.6-1ubuntu0.1 in a few hours, and then in the -proposed repository. Please help us by testing this new package. See https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Testing/EnableProposed for documentation on how to enable and use -proposed.Your feedback will aid us getting this update out to other Ubuntu users. If this package fixes the bug for you, please add a comment to this bug, mentioning the version of the package you tested and change the tag from verification-needed-artful to verification-done-artful. If it does not fix the bug for you, please add a comment stating that, and change the tag to verification-failed-artful. In either case, details of your testing will help us make a better decision. Further information regarding the verification process can be found at https://wiki.ubuntu.com/QATeam/PerformingSRUVerification . [Bug 1730927] Re: Support the new 280 character limit.
> Reading the wiki page on stable release updates[1] I see no option to get this in artful. As described in section 3, the version fixing the bug has to be tested in dev before - the problem now is that dev has 1.7.2-2 while artful has 1.6-1 thus it's not possible to test a version in dev that only fixes this bug - and bumping the version in artful is not acceptable. There is no requirement to "test a version in dev that only fixes this bug". The spirit of the rule you refer to is that 1) you do not fix the bug in the stable release but not in the development release so that when they upgrade to the next release they will regress; and that 2) you do not use the stable release as an experimentation platform for learning about the bug. As an SRU team member I'm happy to make it clear that a fix to Artful to match Twitter's limit is acceptable (in my view) under the "...changes in the environment, server protocols, web services..." part of the SRU policy. The fix itself needs to have minimal regression risk, etc. A minimal cherry-pick would be ideal. And of course someone needs to volunteer and drive the landing of this fix (follow SRU procedure, etc). ** Also affects: corebird (Ubuntu Artful) Importance: Undecided Status: New -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1730927 Title: Support the new 280 character limit. [Bug 1730927] Re: Support the new 280 character limit.
I still think this bug falls completely under point 2.1 of the SRU wiki page. Twitter changed the character limit for a reason, and to say: "just use the old limit" is not a solution, because it makes you now act differently on their service than the rest of the users, who can use the new limit. In the end it could lead to ubuntu users not use corebird anymore. I did apply the change locally to the sources of the artful package and recompiled it for myself. It works as expected now. This could be done easily for all repos, without increasing the major version of the package. I want to make clear that its not about me, i have a working solution. I think this could be and should be fixed for all ubuntu users without the need for them to install unstable packages or 3rd party Repos. I think your interpretation of the SRU is wrong. Since this would make no package patchable in final releases. I really dont understand why this is such a big issue to get the packages patched to work as expected with the twitter webservice. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1730927 Title: Support the new 280 character limit. [Bug 1730927] Re: Support the new 280 character limit.
I prepared a version for stratch-backports and will upload it soon (waiting for my uid to be added to the backports ACL). I'll close this bug now as it's fixed in dev and I can't do anything about it in artful. [Bug 1730927] Re: Support the new 280 character limit.
Not being able to send 280 char tweets is _not_ a heavy but - just use two tweets as everyone did for years. JFTR: There will be a version in stretch-backports with 280 char support soon. I doubt it's important enough for Debian stable/updates but feel free to ask who ever is responsible. I'd provide a version if you get a positive answer.
