Yeap. Note the shell scripts, are now a golang static binary, which
runs as a daemon, and mostly sleeps.

2018-02-26 Thread Stefan Bader
@Dimitri, I think I was mislead by the mention of XenServer and the
similar version number but I think I remember now that those guest
utilities were just a bunch of script which wrote info about the guest
into xenstore which the host then can read from for
management/informational purposes. XenServer made use of that but
otherwise I guess the two things are independent.

False. This is not a candidate for deletion. Ubuntu has packaged the
most recent fork/rewrite of xe-guest-utilities which we support and
ship to clouds that use Xen virtualisation, of which there are 2
commercial offerings.

I do not believe it is an older v6.6 release at all. I do believe it
is the v7.4 release, which maintains backwards compatibility as far
back as v6.6.

Alternatively, could you point me to v7.4 source code of the guest
utils that you were expecting to find, to compare the actual code,
like for like?

[Bug 1750366] Re: Strange versioning in 18.04 Bionic Beaver

2018-02-24 Thread Glyn M Burton
Hello Christian,

May I first apologise if this was not the appropriate place to post. I
was coming from an Ubuntu Server and Ubuntu package point of view.

Indeed it is confusing that a package advertising v7.4 is actually an
older v6.6 release. The bug, therefore, is surely the fact the apt-
system perceived the in-built v7.0 virtual drivers (from XenServer's own
virtual .ISO, much like how VMware does it) as being out of date and
elected to install v7.4. The logic in that is sound. However, it
ultimately installed v6.6 which is the issue.

I cannot comment on Stefan's thoughts as I am not a Debian guy. With
VirtualBox drivers being included as standard now and VMware's available
for installation, would it be unfair to remove Xen's package?

As ever, I revert to your more experienced judgement on the matter.

Best regards,

Modiford.

Might be just another candidate for deletion. Looking now I can no
longer find that package in Debian. And I am pretty sure the guest-
utilities were once pushed by Citrix via Debian. Then they (Citrix)
stopped or very poorly maintained it. Now openxenserver as well as xe-
guest-utilities can no longer be see in Debian. And it looks like
openxenmanager also got removed.

This would actually match the time this was uploaded
https://github.com/xenserver/xe-guest-utilities/releases/tag/v7.4.0
Which is of Apr 26, 2017

Be careful that this 7.4 is NOT the version of the xen server or anything like
it.
It is the version of these xe-guest-utils.

Further if you check the Makefile content of the 7.4 release it has in the
Makefile:
  1 PRODUCT_MAJOR_VERSION=6

  2 PRODUCT_MINOR_VERSION=6

  3 PRODUCT_MICRO_VERSION=80

Not sure what this is about, but if it is an issue it is for
https://github.com/xenserver/xe-guest-utilities/issues IMHO.

To me it is unclear if this is an issue at all.
It is confusing - I agree - but it is just as the upstream projects version
themselve.
SO I'll mark the bug incomplete until we find in a discussion if/where the
actual bug is.

Subscribing smb (for xen) and xnox (for doing the last upload) in case
they might want to add something.

According to the World of Google:
https://www.google.co.uk/search?q=%22apport-collect%22+headless
This has been an issue since 2010 and as best I can tell, still remains unfixed.
Would be pleased to stand corrected on this matter.

Apologies for asking. Your Kernel Bot has just requested I use 'apport-
collect'. Obliging, I did this and it suggests a browser session will
open for confirmation. However, this is a headless Ubuntu Server
installation.

Is there a way around this?
