Thanks for your response.
With the ro setting in fstab, Konqueror and the Konsole both report
permissions as writeable (770), but I didn't test that this was in fact the
case.
Unfortunately, I'm travelling at present, and don't have access to a machine
with Vista. I'll retry the test,
When using only the ro option, can you still write to the partition?
That would be a bug in ntfs-3g then.

If I manually edit /etc/fstab to give umask=227 this appears to mount the Vista
partition as read only.
This isn't obvious, so maybe the System Settings gui needs a minor fix?
